Power Pair Energizes Cobber Offense En Route to Series Split With Macalester.
ST. PAUL-- Concordia and Macalester took turns showcasing their offensive skills as the two teams combined for 33 runs and 33 hits in their series split in St. Paul.

The Scots used a seven-run, fourth inning to seize the opener 11-2, and the Cobbers scored 15 times in the first four innings in the nightcap to pound out an 18-1 win.

The 18 runs scored by the Cobbers in game two are the most posted in a single game this season and highest run production since they beat Augsburg 23-16 last season.

With the split, Concordia continues to hang out in the top five of the conference. The Cobbers are now 7-5 in the MIAC and tied for third place after Saturday's action in the league. Concordia is now 12-15 overall and continues to try and scratch their way to the .500 mark.

Macalester's win in the opener was their fourth in the team's last seven games. The Scots are now 6-8 in the conference and 9-17 overall.

The Power Pair of Chris Klabo and Brian Schumacher continues to lead the ever-improving Concordia offensive lineup. Klabo hit a three-run home run in the first game, and Schumacher went 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and a home run in the second game. The duo is tied for the team lead in roundtrippers with eight and has combined to drive in 62 runs this season. Schumacher alone has 34 RBIs on the year, only 11 shy of breaking the school record for RBIs in a season. For the week, Klabo was 4-for-12 (.333), scored 10 runs, drove in six and knocked out two home runs. Meanwhile, Schumacher went 8-for-14 (.571) with 13 RBIs and two roundtrippers during that same time frame.

Billy DeNet also continues to hit the ball all over the park. DeNet, who hit .091 last season, was the only Concordia player with multiple hits in game one and finished the series 5-for-8 with five runs scored. He has now hit safely in the past 11 games and currently leads the team in hitting with a .434 average.

Joining DeNet and Schumacher in the hit parade in game two were Matt Younguist and Scott Johnson. Youngquist went 3-for-5 batting in the leadoff spot, while Johnson went 2-for-3 and knocked ina career-high four runs.

As impressive as the 18 runs on 15 hits for head coach Bucky Burgau was the pitching performance of Blake Trenbeath. Trenbeath pitched a much-needed complete game for Concordia. He struck out 11 batters, while only allowing four hits on his way to his first collegiate victory.

Concordia will return home for one of the key series of the MIAC season on Tuesday. The Cobbers will host Augsburg on Tuesday, April 26 at 1:00pm at the Jake Chriatiansen Athletic Complex. Both teams are currently 7-5 in the MIAC and the outcome of the series on Tuesday will go a long way in determining the playoff aspirations for both squads.
