St. Thomas Methodically Claims Another MIAC Women's Track and Field Crown!
MOORHEAD-- St. Thomas only won three events on the second day, but scored enough points to win their sixth consecutive MIAC Indoor Track and Field Indoor Championship. The victory is also their 18th title in the 21-year history of women's indoor track and field.

The host Cobbers held off the charge of three teams to finish second. After scoring 58 points in the opening day, they totaled 59 on the final day to finish with 117.0 points. It was their highest team total since 2001 when they also finished second. Gustavus finished with 99.0 total points to claim third place. The Gusties topped a group of three schools that all finished within eight points of each other. St. Mary's finished fourth with 94.0 points and St. Ben's was a close fifth place with 91.0 points. For St. Mary's it was their highest indoor finish in the history of the women's program. The previous highest finish was seventh place back in 2001. 

St. Thomas received another brilliant performance from junior All-American Kristal Grigsby. Grigsby, the shoe-in for Athlete of the Meet., recorded her third victory of the meet on the second day. After winning the high jump and setting a meet record in the long jump on day 1, Grigsby set another meet record in the triple jump. She hammered out a 38-6.75 in the finals of the event to break her own meet record by over four inches, and also bust the Olson Forum record by over seven inches. All told, Grigsby scored 39 points in the meet.

The other wins for St. Thomas came in the 1,000 meters where Brigid Powers ran a 3:01.80 and set an Olson Forum record and in the 800-meter relay. Power was one of only three athletes that won multiple events at the meet.

Besides St. Thomas, Augsburg came away with the most event wins on the final day of competition. Super sprinter Tonnisha Bell broke a meet record when she won the 200 meters in a time of 25.26. Teammate Hannah Dietrich provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:16.48. Concordia's Natalie Hanson finished second in the event and also provisionally qualified for nationals with a mark of 2:17.02.

Hamline's Keidra Anderson was the only other multi-event winner at the meet besides Grigsby and Powers of St. Thomas. She won the 5,000 meters on Friday, and then won the 3,000 meters on Saturday in a school-record time of 10:21.54.

The final two individual event-winners of the day were Jenna Wendorff of St. Ben's in the shot put and Kristi Schneider in the pole vault. Wendorff had a final mark of 44-4.0, which provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. Schneider won the pole vault with a height of 11-6.0 in an event where the top five competitors all provisionally qualified for nationals. 

The final race of the event turned into a curtain call for the host Cobbers. After winning last season's outdoor meet, Concordia successfully defended their indoor 4x400-meter relay title. The Cobbers raced to a 4:01.46 and allowed sprint specialist Angie Pfeiffer to seal the victory in the final leg.

Grigsby Gallops St. Thomas Into Familiar Position After Day 1 at MIAC Meet.

Hamline's Keidra Anderson crosses the line in the 5,000 meters, and sets a new Olson Forum record and shatters the old Piper school mark.

Moorhead-- Kristal Grigsby helped power St. Thomas into the lead after the first day of the 2005 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet. The Tommies are 24 points clear of Concordia and 29 points ahead of third-place St. Mary's. St. Thomas is on track to win the MIAC meet for the sixth consecutive season and 18th time in the 21-year history of the competition.

Grigsby, a junior All-American from Minneapolis, became the first athlete in the history of the MIAC to break the 19-foot barrier in the long jump. Grigsby launched a jump of 19-0 in the qualifying round of the competition and ended up winning the event by over six inches. The mark sets an MIAC meet record, is the farthest jump in the nation this year and breaks her old school record, which she set last weekend. She rounded out the first day of competition by also winning the high jump and finishing third in the 55 meters.

The first day of competition saw one MIAC record broken, along with three facility records (Olson Forum) and seven school records. The event that claimed the most records was the 5,000 meters. All three of the top finishers bettered the Olson Forum and broke their school's mark. Keidra Anderson of Hamline won the event by setting a new Olson Forum record and shattering the Piper record in a time of 17:38.88. That time is over 13 seconds faster than the old school record, which she set earlier this season. It also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA national meet. Leah Wurm of St. Ben's finished second in a time of 17:50.15 and bettered the Blazer record, and third-place finisher Amy Lyons of Bethel clocked an 18:09.93 and broke the Royals record.

Joining Anderson in breaking Olson Forum records were Tonnisha Bell of Augsburg in the 55 meters and the distance medley relay team from Concordia. Bell, the 2003 55-meter champ, clocked a 7.19 in the finals to break the old record by .06 of a second and win the event by .14 seconds. The Cobber relay team of Rachel Charpentier, Kelly Olson, Carrie Fransen and Jen St. John ran a 12:36.55 and bested the old mark by almost 10 seconds.

The two other top races of the day were the 600 meters and the mile. In the 600 meters, Maria Roche of St. Mary's nosed out Ali Cordie of Gustavus to win the event and break the Cardinal school record. Her time of 1:37.24 breaks her own school record. Cordie's time of 1:37.96 betters her own school record by less than one second. Hannah Dietrich of Augsburg finished third in a time of 1:38.19 and broke her own school mark of 1:38.90.

In the mile, Brigid Power of St. Thomas allowed the rest of the field to set a slow pace and then brought home the win with a solid finishing 800 meters. She broke out of the pack in the final two laps but was never let out of reach by Natalie Hanson of Concordia and had to kick hard in the final 200 meters to come away with the victory.

In the day's other three events, Concordia's Angie Pfeiffer won the 400 meters for the second straight year. Her time of 58.60 provisionally qualifies her for nationals. Molly Bowman of St. Thomas narrowly won the 55-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.63 in the finals nipped Kirsten Fristad of Macalester. Bowman posted a national provisional qualifying time in the prelims, as did Kaela Schramm from Macalester.

The final win of the day was garnered by freshman Molly Christian of Carleton in the weight throw. She recorded a throw of 46-1.25 in the preliminary round and that was good for the victory.
