Saint John's 10, Concordia-Moorhead 2
St. Cloud, Minn. - Five different Saint John's University players scored goals in the first period as the Johnnies jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Concordia-Moorhead College and went on to win 10-2 in the first game of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal series at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
SJU was led by senior Matt Erredge, Austin, who had the hat trick in the game. Sophomore Kelly Wynn, St. Paul, also added two goals for the Johnnies. Senior Mike Wehmhoff, Plymouth, had four points - one goal and three assists in the win.
Concordia received goals by senior Paul Thacker, Minot, N.D. and sophomore Mark Schiller, Detroit Lakes. Thacker and Schiller each had two points in the game along with junior Brent Kuehne, Detroit Lakes, who assisted on both of Concordia's goals.
SJU senior goalie Mark Rice, St. Louis Park, stopped 18 of 20 shots he faced in the game to pick up the win. With today's win, Rice set a new SJU career goalie victory record with his 42nd career win, surpassing the previous record of 41 career wins by Mark Ketzner from 1993 to 1997. Sophomore goalie Bryan Howard, Gold River, Calif., started in goal for the Cobbers and was pulled with 3:35 left in the first period after giving up five goals on 11 shots. Junior goalie Shawn Morse, Regina, Sask., replaced Howard and stopped nine of 14 shots he faced the rest of the game.
SJU out shot the Cobbers 25 to 20 in the game. The Johnnies were 2-of-6 on the power play, while Concordia was held scoreless on the man advantage in five attempts. SJU is now 13-11-2 overall while Concordia falls to 13-11-2. The second game of the weekend series will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28, beginning at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. If Concordia wins on Sunday, there will a 15-minute mini-game to decide who advances to the MIAC playoff championship series next weekend.
