St. Cloud, Minn. - Junior Jason Dimatteo, Anchorage, Alaska, scored the game-winning goal with 7:22 left in the minigame to lift Concordia-Moorhead College to a 3-1 win over Saint John's University in the deciding game of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hockey semifinal series at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Cobbers won the regulation game on Sunday, 4-3, on a power play goal with 1:36 left in the game by junior Ken Putt, Burnsville. SJU had won the first game of the series, 10-2, on Saturday. The Johnnies came right back less than two minutes later on a goal by sophomore Chad Preble, Apple Valley.
In the second period, Concordia scored two consecutive goals by junior Travis Rybchinski, Saskatoon, Sask., and senior Paul Thacker, Willow, Alaska, to take a 3-1 lead. SJU struck before the end of the second period on a goal by sophomore John Konrad, Bloomington, to cut the Cobbers lead to 3-2.
In the third period, SJU tied the game on a power play goal by junior Steve Aldrich, Woodbury. Assists on the goal went to freshman Chad Helmer, Eden Prairie, and senior Matt Erredge, Austin. The Johnnies were looking for the win or tie to capture the series victory when Ken Putt scored the game winner for the Cobbers on the power play.
Eight different SJU players had points in the game for the Johnnies. Concordia benefited from two early assists by junior Rob Gramer, Moorhead. Sophomore goalie Bryan Howard, Gold River, Calif., stopped 26 of 29 shots he faced in the game to pick up the win. Senior goalie Mark Rice, St. Louis Park, made 22 saves on 26 shots in the loss.
In the 15-minute minigame, Concordia scored the first two goals of the period by junior Brent Kuehne, Detroit Lakes, and Jason Dimatteo. Bryan Howard stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced in the minigame, as compared to SJU goalie Mark Rice making two saves on five shots.
Concordia improves its overall record to 14-11-2 on the season.

MIAC Men's Hockey Playoffs -- Semifinals/Day 2
at State Fairgrounds Coliseum
St. Thomas 4, Augsburg 1 (Tommies win series 2-0)
ST. PAUL -- Steve Aronson scored a goal and three assists and continued
his
dominance of Augsburg as his host Tommies (15-11-1) scored a 4-1 win
and
advanced to next weekend's MIAC men's hockey playoff finals.
The Toms ran their win streak to six and beat Augsburg for the fourth
time
in nine days. The Toms reached the playoff finals for the 13th time
in the
14-year history of the playoff format, and also clinched the school's
17th
consecutive winning season with Sunday's win.
The Toms also avenged a 1998 playoff finals sweep at the hands of Augsburg,
which ended its season 11-12-4.
The Toms will host third-seed Concordia, which surprised second-seed
St.
John's on the road Sunday. The Cobbers, who lost 10-2 Saturday, won
4-3
Sunday afternoon in St. Cloud to force a 15-minute mini-game, which
they won
3-1.
The site, day and time of the best-of-two final series will be determined
Monday, although it's likely the games will be played Friday and Saturday
night at Augsburg. The Toms' home ice at the Coliseum won't be available.
The winner of the playoffs receives the MIAC's automatic berth to the
NCAA
playoffs, which start March 12-13.
Aronson, the MIAC regular-season scoring champ with 35 points, scored
six
points this weekend and 13 points in the four victories over the Auggies.
For the second day in a row, UST broke to a 3-0 lead in the second
period.
UST junior Tavis Gillard, who has been in goal throught the six-game
win
streak, stopped 20 of 21 shots. He lost his shutout with 24 seconds
to play
on a goal by Mario LeBlanc. Gillard stopped 35 of 38 shots in Saturday's
4-3
win and now has allowed just 12 goals during the six-game win streak.
Augsburg's Ryan McIntosh stopped 31 of 35 shots Saturday and 40 of 44
in
58:15 of play Sunday.

Playoff format. This is not a total goals series. If the two teams are tied after the two games of the series, (a win each or two ties), there will be a 15 minute minigame to settle the series winner. If it is still tied after that minigame period, the teams will go into a sudden death period to settle the series. There is no "overtime" Saturday or Sunday.
