Concordia 1, St. Thomas 1
Brock Blickre's power-play goal 20 seconds into the third period Friday night let Concordia (14-11-3) tie St. Thomas (15-11-2) in the first game of a best-of-two series for the MIAC playoff championship at Augsburg Arena.
The Cobbers trailed 1-0 after two periods but started the third on a power play. Blickre scored off assists by Mike Gast and Jason DiMatteo.
There was no overtime due to the best-of-two format. The teams will play Saturday here at 7 p.m., with the winner claiming the championship and the MIAC's automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs, which begin March 12-13. The teams are now 1-1-2 in their last four meetings dating back to last season.
St. Thomas scored at 16:41 of the first period as Jay Barry's deflected shot (assisted by Luke Volk and Brian Bolf) beat Bryan Howard. On the game, Howard stopped 36 of 37 shots. He denied UST star Steve Aronson on a shorthanded breakaway bid with 6:30 remaining. It was the 13th time this season the Cobbers had held their opponent to two or fewer goals.
Gillard stopped 25 shots for the Toms. UST was 0-for-1 in power plays to Concordia's 1-of-4. The Cobbers had only two penaties for four minutes, and UST had five for 10 minutes.
UST is now 6-0-1 and allowed just 13 goals in its last seven games, while Concordia is 5-3-3 in its last 11.

Playoff format. This is not a total goals series. If the two teams are tied after the two games of the series, (a win each or two ties), there will be a 15 minute minigame to settle the series winner. If it is still tied after that minigame period, the teams will go into a sudden death period to settle the series. There is no "overtime."
UST Men's Hockey Notes/March 1
By Gene McGivern, UST SID
*UST made the MIAC men's hockey playoffs for the 14th time in the 14-year history of the format. The top-seeded Toms beat Augsburg 4-3 and 4-1 this weekend to reach the finals for the 13th time in 14 seasons. However, UST has only won three of the previous 12 playoff championships. *UST hosts Concordia Friday and Saturday in the finals (best-of-2 series).
The games will be played at Augsburg Arena on the Auggie campus in Mpls (I-94 & Riverside exit). (UST's home ice at Fairgrounds Coliseum unavailable). Both games will start at 7 p.m. UST and the Cobbers split a series in St. Paul back on Nov. 13-14. The Toms won 4-1 then lost 4-3 in the second game after falling behind 4-0. UST is 19-2-1 in the last 22 meetings with Concordia, although they are 1-1-1 in the last three games. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in Moorhed last February in a game where the Toms played without All-American Steve Aronson.
*The playoff champion gets a berth into the NCAA playoffs which begin March 12-13. UST has made the NCAA playoffs seven times but has no berths since 1994.
*The Toms, who played one of the toughest schedules in the nation, are 2-7 vs. non-conference teams. UST had the bye for the MIAC Thanksgiving tourney last November. They played at Alabama-Huntsville (lost 6-4 and 7-2); lost twice to UW-Superior 7-0 and 4-0; lost 5-4 to UW-Stout; lost 7-4 to UW-Stevens Point; split with Bemidji State (5-4 loss 4-3 OT win); and beat UW-River Falls 4-3.
*The Toms played 10 one-goal games (6-4).
*The Toms were swept by St. John's 5-2 and 7-2 Feb. 5-6 -- the first time they were swept in an MIAC regular-season series in 16 seasons, covering 126 series. They stood 9-11-1 after those defeats and were in danger of finishing .500 or sub-.500 for the first time since 1981-82. But they won their last four games to claim the MIAC title -- sweeping St. Olaf (2-1 and 6-3) and sweeping Augsburg (7-3 and 2-1). The MIAC crown was the school's ninth in the last 11 seasons.
*The Toms' sweep of Augsburg Feb. 27-28 let them climb to 15-11-1 on the season. In the process they clinched the school's 17th consecutive winning season and clinched the 29th consecutive winning season for Coach Terry Skrypek. Skrypek has never had a losing season in coaching. He was 325-42-2 in 17 years at Hill-Murray HS (12 state tourney berths) and is 222-106-19 in 12 seasons at UST.
*UST junior Steve Aronson, a first-team All-American last year, scored six points in the playoff sweep of Augsburg and had 13 points in the four wins over the Auggies over the last nine days. The MIAC Player of the Year candidate won the MIAC scoring title with 35 points in 16 games (he was second last season behind teammate Brian Bolf).
Aronson has 146 career points and is on pace to become just the
third UST player to score 200 career points. He was named MIAC Player of
the Week and Division III National Player of the Week by US Hockey Online
last week after scoring seven points in the Feb. 20-21 sweep of Augsburg.
Aronson has 20
goals and 33 assists in 27 games.
*UST junior goalie Tavis Gillard has been in net throughout the Toms' current six-game winning streak, and he allowed just 12 goals in that span. In MIAC regular-season games, Gillard led the conference in wins (9) and was second in GAA and save %
*UST junior Brian Bolf has 17 goals and 26 assists in 27 games and now has 100 career points. He tied for second in MIAC scoring at 31 points after winning the scoring title in 1997-98 with 37 points.
