MINNEAPOLIS -- Steve Aronson scored two mid-game goals to break a 1-1 tie en route to a hat trick as St. Thomas (16-11-2) won the MIAC men's hockey playoff championship with a 5-2 win over Concordia (14-11-3). The Toms advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1994. They are now 7-0-1 in their last eight games and allowed just 15 goals in that crucial stretch.
The Cobbers broke to a quick 1-0 lead as Mike Gast scored just 1:55 into the game (assisted by Brock Blickre and Ken Putt).
UST answered 1:11 later as Tom Skrypek, the nephew of head coach Terry Skrypek, scored just his second goal of the season to tie it at 1-1 at 3:06. Aronson scored at 6:51 of the first off a rebound shot for a 2-1 lead.
Aronson scored off another rebound shot at 5:14 of the second for a 3-1 lead. Matt Caven made it 4-1 Toms with a score at 12:51. Kori Pearson pulled the Cobbers within 4-2 on a power-play goal (from Rob Gramer and Paul Thacker) at 19:23.
The Cobbers outshot the Toms 15-4 in the final period but couldn't score. UST goalie Tavis Gillard stopped all 15 shots and closed the night with 36 saves. Bryan Howard stopped 19 of 23 before being pulled with 50 seconds left. Aronson scored the empty-net goal with 31 seconds to play to complete a hat trick.
