Men's Basketball : Auggies Prove Too Much for Cobbers; Playoffs Questionable

Post-season play is becoming more and more doubtful for the menās team. Saturdayās game against Augsburg ended in defeat for the Cobbers, 77-83. That loss dropped the Cobbersā MIAC record 2-6.

"We still have a very good chance at the playoffs. A lot of teams are only a couple games ahead of us," said senior forward Kevin Pearson. "All we have to do is concentrate on the games we have left to play."

Pearson brought in 21 points and seven rebounds, leading the Cobbers in scoring. Senior forward Daimen Crump followed, scoring 17 points, also saving seven rebounds. Despite the strong offense, the Cobbers never got the edge on Augsburg.

"Right away we got behind and we had trouble coming back," said Pearson.

According to head coach Duane Siverson, the key to finishing the season strong and making an appearance in the playoffs will be defense. Pearson agreed, saying that the team needs to stop giving up easy shots and allowing opponents to score.

"We have to pick up our intensity on defense. If we pick it up on defense, I think that will help our game on the offensive end of the floor," Siverson said.

Women's Basketball: With Two MIAC / Wins, The Women's Team Locks its Spot at the Top

Two MIAC wins last week brought the Concordia womenās basketball team back to the winning track. After Concordia lost its first game of the season to St. Thomas on Jan. 13, the wins over Augsburg and Hamline were needed to keep the Cobbers at the top of the conference.

"That [St. Thomas game] was a devastating loss, but on the road at Augsburg we played a great second half. In the Hamline game, it was just a matter of putting them away," said head coach Kathy Wall.

Concordia hosted Hamline on Jan. 20 in a make-up game after the original Jan. 15 game was postponed due to bad weather. Concordia led the game going into halftime and held that lead to win 72-59.

Senior forward Holly Zollar led the Cobber in scoring, bringing in 18 points. She was followed by senior forward Ann Mehrkens with 16 points, freshman Nikki Vetter with 11 and junior center Leah Sonstelie with 10.

Defense was again a key to the Cobbersā victor, forcing 24 Hamline turnovers. Hamline was solid in rebounds, saving 56 shots to Concordiaās 36.

Traveling to Augsburg on Jan. 18, the Cobbers handed the Auggies a 54-81 loss. In this game, Mehrkens led Concordia with 17 points. Following her were Sonstelie with 14 points, Zollar with 11 and freshman guard Steffi Backer with 10.

In the MIAC, the Cobbers are 8-1, second to St. Thomas at 9-0. However, Wall says the team has a lot to work on.

"We need to execute better. Itās still early, but we need to focus a little better," she said.

Men's Hockey Suffers Tough Loss at Bethel Selmer Moen, 1/24/97 Only one shot separated the Cobbers from a shutout loss against Bethel last Friday night. Freshman center Ken Putt netted the only score of the evening as the Cobbers fell to the Royals 6-1. According to some team members, the reasons for the off-game were simple. "We never really got going. We were just flat," sophomore winger Brock Blickre said. Others thought the numerous cancellations and postponements of games affected play. "It could have been the two weeks off, or that could just be an excuse for us not playing well," said senior winger Jeff Corkish. On Saturday, the Cobbers battled Bethel to a 5-5 tie. The Cobbers were able to control the puck more than in Fridayās game and played better defense, according to Blickre. "We controlled the game in the second and third periods," Corkish said. Again, it was Putt scoring in the first, assisted by Blickre and sophomore defenseman Justin Reinholz. Blickre then scored on a power-play in the second, assisted by senior wing Chris Thomes and freshman defensman Rob Gramer. Following the close of the second, the Cobbers were down 2-4, but in the third period the Cobbers tallied three goals. The first came from sophomore defensemen Rory Kortan, assisted by junior forward Todd Hashbarger and junior wing Josh Brekke. The freshmen winger Bryan Haroldson scored with help from sophomore defenseman Corey Rupp and Gramer. Lastly, Corkish scored with assists from Kortan and freshman defenseman Bryan Knutson, bringing the game to 5-5. The Cobbers had hoped for the win against Bethel, but as Blickre put it, "the breaks all went their way." Last weekendās loss and tie bring the Cobbers to 1-4-1 in conference play and 3-7-2 overall. Corkish continues to lead Concordia with 14 points on the year coming from 8 goals and 6 assists. Return to Jan 24 index of The Concordian Sports Wrestling : Cobbers Make Strong Comeback Darrell Ehrlick, 1/24/97 Despite winter doldrums, a Cobber grapplers managed to bounce back from a tough loss and reclaim the winnerās circle. The Concordia wrestling team defeated Fergus Falls 31-21 last Friday. The outcome was definitely different than the 27-12 defeat by Valley City State University two weeks ago. "Having three weeks off [during break], it takes a toll on you and you feel sluggish," sophomore Jeremy Hernandez said. Winning performances by Hernandez (118 lbs.), junior Colby Marich (150 lbs.), sophomore Chad Nicholas (167 lbs.), sophomore Nathan Reiff (190 lbs.), freshman Phil Brandstetter (HWT), and junior Charlie Nelson (HWT) all contributed to the win. Hernandezās win in Fridayās meet upped his personal record to a team-leading 8-3. Hernandez has struggled throughout the season with minor injuries, and his return to the mat was welcome. "The wrestling level picked up," head coach Doug Perry said. "I donāt know if we reached that next level, but hopefully we will be there this weekend." Fridayās meet started out slow. Concordia had two losses before Marich pinned Fergus Fallsā Roger Terry and started the Cobbers toward victory. "It was a difference of momentum; we started out badly, but broke out and away," Marich said. "It could have been easy to let Valley City happen again." Thursday, the team participated in the Itasca Duals. Currently, Itasca is ranked first in the nation among junior colleges. Then, on Saturday, the team takes on the University of Mary. "Itās going to be tough competition. Weāre going to give it our best, but weāre not getting our hopes too high," Nicholas said. Last week Mary defeated Wyoming, a Division I contender, in the Northern Iowa Duals. "In these meets, everybodyās got to be on top of their game. We have to wrestle with intelligence," Perry said. For the two meets, the team plans to be at full strength. Overall, the team is healthy, with only a few players with minor injuries. The only questionable injury is Marichās, who is currently suffering from a hand injury. According to Perry, the intensity of practice has been somewhat interrupted by what he calls "the dog days of winter". "We have to deal and get over the midseason burnout and injuries," Marich said. According to Perry, the phenomenon is nothing to worry about, however. "Every team goes through a period where things arenāt fitting together. The key is just trying to make it through," Perry said. Though the sense of rhythm for the team is not yet established, according to Perry, the team is close. "Right now weāre consistent. Some guys have been doing well; we need to pick the rest of the guys up and give them both the confidence and intensity," Perry said. Return to Jan 24 index of The Concordian Sports Cobber Men's and Women's Track & Field: Season Opens Strong Both menās and womenās track and field teams began their competitive indoor season at the Bemidji State Super 8 Invitational Meet held last Saturday. The womenās team placed third out of 12 teams. While the menās side did not keep team scores. For may team members, this meet was an opportunity to qualify for the upcoming MIAC championship meet. Return to Jan 24 index of The Concordian Sports Swimming: Jan 24, 1997 Cobbers Take Third in Cobber Quad The Cobber womenās swim team placed third in the first ever Concordia Quadrangular meet. Hamline won the meet with 139 points, followed by St. Thomas with 92 points. St. Kateās took fourth with 31 points. The Cobbers brought in 32 points for their finish. Top placers for the team included Melanie Friedt and freshman Karie Baker, who placed sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 200m breaststroke. The relays were also a strong point. In the 400 free relay, squad A, composed of juniors Lindsey Bailey and Shannon Warzecha, and freshmen Janey Hill and Karyn Senst, placed third. In the 200m relay, squad A again placed third, with a team of Warzecha, sophomore Jill Backman and freshmen Anne Mostad and Terri Rennick. In the 200 IM, junior Sarah Zavoral placed third, freshman Erika Torske placed tenth and Backman took eleventh. In the 1000m free, Hill took second and Torske took sixth.
