2/22/97 Cobbers Win 78-74 at Bethel, End with 10-2 run, 4th place in MIAC 2/25/97 The Cobbers garnered several MIAC
awards at the recent MIAC coaches meeting. Daimen
Crump was named to the All-MIAC team for a second consecutive year.

forward Kevin Pearson , 2/22/97 The Cobbers defeated Bethel 78-74 tonight. Cornelius Bishop hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to assure the victory. Daimen Crump scored his 1,000th career point in the second half and totaled 18 points. Bishop also had 18. Kevin Pearson threw in 15 points. Greg Dean added four points, six assists and six steals, increasing his season steal record to 126 and career record to 307. Bishop ended his season by claiming the Cobber record for 3-point percentage in a season, hitting 53 of 113 for 46.9%. He broke the record set in 1988 by Mark Schwarz, who hit 44.2%. The game marked the final game for six seniors: Cornelius Bishop, Daimen Crump, Greg Dean, Nick Guida, Brett Klabo and Kevin Pearson. They ended the season with a 12-8 MIAC record, tied for 4th but out of the playoffs, 13-10 overall. This after a 3-8 start, 2-6 in the MIAC. Concordia tied with Augsburg, St. Olaf and St. John's for 4th in
the MIAC at 12-8. But Augsburg has the better record against those tied
teams.
Only 12 Cobber teams have finished higher in the MIAC than this year's 4th place Cobbers. This year's team came back from a 2-6 MIAC start, 3-8 overall to win 10 of their last 12 games. The 1996-97 Cobbers set a number of individual Cobber records and had the best 3-point shooting percentage in school history at 41.7%. 2/22/97 Senior Daimen Crump slammed dunked his way onto Concordia's 1,000 point club tonight. In the final game of his two-year career, Crump gave the Cobbers a 52-36 lead in the second half while scoring his 1000th point on a dunk after as steal by Greg Dean and a pass from Nick Guida. 2/19/97 Concordia beat Augsburg tonight 76-71 to move to 11-8 in the MIAC, 12-10 overall. Augsburg ends their regular season 12-8 in the MIAC, 15-9 overall. Daimen Crump had 22 for the Cobbers. Greg Dean just missed a triple double with 10 points, 10 assists and 9 steals. (See Box Score) 2/17/97Concordia suffered a 91-78 loss at Hamline tonight as the Pipers shot 72% in the second half. Concordia fell to 10-8 in the MIAC 11-10 overall. Daimen Crump led the Cobbers with 24 points. Cornelius Bishop added 13, James Gillhouse had 12 and Kevin Pearson had 10. The Cobbers made just 1 of their 4 free throws while Hamline made 20 of 25. (See Box Score) Cobber sophomore Brian Kesselringsuffered a cracked tibia in the game and is done for the year. 2/15/97 Concordia defeated St. Thomas here 59-51 this afternoon in MIAC men's basketball for their fifth straight win and the eighth in their last nine outings. The Cobbers moved to 10-7 in the MIAC, 11-9 overall. St. Thomas fell to 11-6 in the MIAC, 13-8 overall. (See Forum Story) Concordia jumped to a 35-22 lead at the half, then watched it slip to 3 at 44-41 with 8:38 left. Then Daimen Crump hit two 3 pointers around a Greg Dean free throw to make it 51-41 at the 4:33 mark. (See Box Score) Crump led the Cobbers with 23 points. Dean had 10 steals, 10 points and 7 assists. Kevin Pearson also had 10 points for the Cobbers. Brett Klabo had 15 rebounds, 2 blocks, a steal and 5 points for the Cobbers. Concordia held the Tommies to 30% shooting from the field (18-59). Karnell James led the Tommies with 24 points. The Cobber win insured Gustavus, a 74-65 loser at home today in OT to Carleton, at least a share of the MIAC title. 2/10/97 The Cobbers beat St. Mary's at home 63-61 tonight. The Cobbers jumped to a 30-19 lead at halftime and maintained the lead throughout the contest. The Cobbers were up by as much as 19 points in the second half. A late rally by St. Mary's got them as close as 4 points. A 3 pointer by St. Mary's at the buzzer made it a 63-61 final. (See Box Score) (See Forum Story)(See Also Winona Daily News Story) The Cobbers were led by senior Nick Guida who recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Guida was key in maintaining the lead by making 8-9 free throw attempts. James Gillhouse came off the bench and scored 12 points. Daimen Crump added 11 for the home squad. The win was Concordia's fourth in a row and 7th in their last eight games. It also put the cagers over the .500 mark for the first time since they began 1-0. They are now 9-7 in the MIAC , putting them into a three-way tie for 4th place in the conference. 2/8/97 The Cobbers won again this afternoon at St. Olaf 87-72. Leading the way for Concordia with 34 points was Daimen Crump . Junior James Gillhouse provided 16 points. Kevin Pearson added 11 points while helping hold St. Olaf's Tim Schilling to 7 points. The Cobbers took a 47-31 lead at the half on 75% shooting from the field. Concordia went to 8-7 in the MIAC, 9-9 overall. St. Olaf fell to 9-7, 22-9 overall. |
