Men's Basketball : Winning streak comes to an end

Putting an end to the three-game winning streak, the Concordia menās basketball team fell the Gustavus Wednesday night, 45-65. The loss puts the Cobbers 5-7 in the MIAC, 5-9 overall.

Leading the Cobbers in scoring were senior guard Greg Dean and junior forward Brett Klabo, each bringing in 11 points.

Earlier this week, the team defeated Hamline 72-59. According to head coach Duane Siverson, each win created a momentum that was missing during the early season.

"I think that the difference is that now they believe they can win," he said.

At half-time, the game was tied at 26, but in the second half, Concordia took over, scoring 26 points and allowing Hamline only four.

"We picked up a notch defensively in the second half. Whenever we play good defensively, it gets our offense going," said senior forward Daimen Crump, who led the team with 19 points.

Despite the win, Siverson still sees room for improvement.

"I thought we were too anxious offensively the first half," he said. According to Siverson, Dean is a strong asset to the team. Against Hamline, Dean brought in seven points, nine assists and 11 steals.

"Teams canāt do what they normally do against Greg. Itās not something that we taught him; itās just instinctive," Siverson said.

On Saturday, Concordia defeated MIAC powerhouse St. Johnās 75-71. Crump led the team again with 23 points. Senior forward Kevin Pearson brought in 17 points, going five for five on free-throws. Tomorrow, the Cobbers host Carleton at 7:30 p.m.

Women's Basketball: Basketball hurting

As conference play heats up, the Concordia womenās basketball team is running into teams that are wreaking havoc on its MIAC standing.

Against St. Benās on Jan. 25, the Cobbers kept the game going down to the wire, but in the end, the Blazers came out on top, defeating Concordia 69-68. Concordia controlled the first half of the game and going into the half, led 34-30. With 2:50 left to play in the game, Concordia was still leading 65-60. St. Benās rallied, sinking a three-pointer at the 2:00 mark and then, less than a minute later, sinking a lay-up, putting them ahead.

In the last 55 seconds, junior Cobber center Leah Sonstelie sunk two free-throws. The next two offensive drives by Concordia failed to give the Cobbers the lead. Sonstelie led the Cobbers in scoring, bringing in 20 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Ann Mehrkens followed with ten points and ten rebounds. Senior guard Mindy Schirm also contributed ten points and added five rebounds.

Against Bethel on Jan. 23, the Cobbers fared no better, losing 50-55. In this game, the Cobbers struggled to get ahead, falling behind 30-18 at the half, unable to regain a solid lead. In this game, Holly Zollar led the team with 15 points and 8 rebounds, followed by freshman guard Steffi Backer with nine points and eight rebounds.

Also bringing in big points were sophomore center Nichole Walla with eight points and six rebounds and Mehrkens with seven points and eight rebounds.

Currently, Concordia is ranked fourth in the MIAC. Tomorrow, they will host Carleton.

Men's Hockey : Hockey hands two losses to Hamline Selmer Moen, 1/31/97 Things turned around for the Concordia menās hockey team this week as they defeated Hamline on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon in a weather-delayed series. Monday, the Cobbers won by a score of 10-2. Leading the team was senior wing Jeff Corkish, who picked up a hat trick. Also scoring was junior newcomer Josh Arnold, who had two goals and two assists and sophomore forward Ryan Kortan, who also had two goals and two assists. "We were more confident going in because we knew that we had more talent than they did, said Arnold. "We had been facing powerhouses in the past and it was nice to the powerhouse instead." On Tuesday the Cobbers again outdid Hamline, this time by a score of 12-6. In this game, five Cobber players came up with a pair of goals each. Arnold, Corkish, freshman Ken Putt, senior Chris Thomes and sophomore Justin Reinholz each netted two. Tuesday nightās performance was similar to Mondayās, according to freshman Rob Gramer. "It was nice to score some goals and get a couple of wins," he said. When asked how they were adjusting to playing at Concordia, new recruits Gramer and Arnold sighted personal improved play this week as a sign of a smooth adjustment. "I was struggling for a little while, but now things are starting to click," said Arnold. Gramer added that the series with Hamline had given him a chance "to get the confidence level up." The Hamline series brings the Cobbers to 3-4-1 in the MIAC and 5-7-2 overall and keeps them in the playoff hunt. The Cobbers travel to third-ranked Augsburg this weekend. "We need at least one [win] this weekend to have a shot at the fourth spot in the playoff," said Arnold. The Cobbers will make up the University of Minnesota-Crookston game on Tuesday at home. Return to Jan 31 index of The Concordian Sports Wrestling : Itasca too much for grapplers Darrell Ehrlick, 1/31/97, Managing Editor "It was tough," said sophomore grappler Jeremy Hernandez about last weekās Itasca Dual Meet. Last week Concordia experienced a tough 49-6 loss to Itasca Community College. "I felt we came out excited and we got caught," first-year student Phil Brandstetter said. Brandstetter wrestles at 190 lbs. Concordia boasted only two wins: junior Colby Marich (150 lbs) and sophomore Nathan Reiff (177 lbs). "We felt we could have done better, but we have to give credit to them. They deserved to win," Brandstetter said. The next challenge for the wrestlers will be MIAC Duals at St. Johnās University against teams such as Augsburg and St. Johnās. "Itasca was definitely not the best team weāll face," Brandstetter said. Recently, it has been a series of ups and downs for the Cobber wrestling team. Three weeks ago, in the Cobberās first meet of the semester, they lost to Valley City State 27-12. But, two weeks ago, Concordia defeated Fergus Falls 31-21. Head coach Doug Perry had hoped the team would continue the winning streak in Itasca and then prepare for this weekendās MIAC duals. "Iām looking forward to that. Itāll be fun," Hernandez said. Preparation and practice for the meet has been more relaxed physically, but more intense mentally. According to Hernandez, the challenge will be staying focused. "This year there is just one more competition," Hernandez said, "but we can compete with them." Return to Jan 31 index of The Concordian Sports Cobber Women's Track & Field: Womenās track gives strong showing in meet By Jennifer Gayvert, Sports Editor As the season picks up speed, the Concordia womenās track and field team is establishing itself as a potential powerhouse. At the Concordia Invitational meet held Jan. 25, the Cobbers placed second with a total of 214 points. Jamestown won the meet. "I thought it was a very successful meet," said junior Becky Kearns. "This year in particular, we have a large number of both men and women, so weāre filling events, participating and working hard together in practice. Itās showing at the meets." Senior Sarah Severson was one of the Cobbers strengths during the meet, placing second in the high jump and pole vault and third in the 55m hurdles and the long jump. Freshman Karin McGregor also stood out in the meet, placing third in the triple jump, fourth in heat one of the 55-meter dash and fifth in the long jump. According to McGregor, the results of the meet were somewhat of a surprise. "I didnāt really know what the competition would be. We did a lot better than I expected," McGregor said. Kearns also contributed to the second-place finish, placing seventh in the shot put and winning the 20-lb. Weight throw. Although the Cobbers have yet to take on a MIAC school, the team feels these meets are still valuable. "These meets are really important in preparing for the conference meet. There are a lot of Division-II teams at these meets, and that really helps us prepare well for conference competition," said Kearns. "The only disadvantage is not seeing the MIAC schools." Tomorrow, the women will head across the river to compete in the NDSU Bison Open. Return to Jan 31 index of The Concordian Sports Cobber Men's Track & Field: Cobber track ready for improvement By Jennifer Gayvert, Sports Editor Injuries contributed to a less than ideal performance by the Cobber menās track and field team at the Concordia Invitational, according to many competitors. The men placed third overall in the meet, with Jamestown bringing home the trophy. "We had key players out with injuries, and that affected the team score. Overall, though, we did well÷a lot of guys competed hard," said senior Bill Keating, who won the 800m. Other strong performances included senior Jarod Barnes, who placed 11th in the 800m and 1500m; sophomore Dan Buchholz, who placed seventh in the high jump and ninth in the shot put; and senior Ryan Williams, who placed seventh in the 1000m, ninth in the high jump, seventh in the shot put and third in the triple jump. "I think things are coming along well. Overall, we know we can do better than we did at that meet," said head coach Garrick Larson. "Iām not really worried about anything. I think things will come together over time." Minor injuries such as strains have made competition painful or impossible for some players. Having teammates out this early has been a surprise for some. "A lot of newcomers are hurt that we werenāt expecting. But theyāre working their way back," said Buchholz. Although the team has yet to take on MIAC squads, the athletes still see many positive aspects to competing against the bigger Division-II teams. "We have an advantage because we get to compete against schools like NDSU, UND and Bemidji that are quite a bit more competitive. Then when we get to the conference, the competition doesnāt seem quite as stiff," said Keating. Although the team did not perform as well overall as it hoped, teammates are still positive about the potential for the rest of the season. "Overall, weāre still trying to be patient.
