Men's Basketball : Cobbers defeat Scots; move up in MIAC Vic Quick 2/7/97 Continuing to move up in the conference, the Concordia men's basketball team derfeated Macalaster here 84-59, putting the Cobbers at 7-7 in the MIAC. "This win does a lot for our team's morale, " said head coach Duane Siverson. Concordia opened the game up with a 27-11 run and never gave up the lead. Macalaster came close, shrinking the Cobber lead to eight points in the first half, but couldn't get the edge. Going into the half, the Cobbers led 43-30. "We came out, played well and stuck to outr game plan," said senior forward Daimen Crump. Crump led the Cobbers in scoring, bringing in 15 points during the game. Also adding big points were senior guard Cornelius Bishop with 13 points and junior forward James Gillhouse with 10. According to Siverson, this victory helps the team's morale. Siverson was worried about a letdown before this weekend's game at St. Olaf. "I told them at halftime not to play at a level below our potential. We only have seven games left, and I told them to leave it on the floor," said Siverson. "I was pleased with our intensity in the second half. Offensive control key in win The Cobbers controlled most of the game, leading 34-20 going into the half. Leading scoring for the game was senior forward Holly Zollar, who brought in 11 points. Also strong was freshman guard Sara Kragerud, who scored 10 points. Offensively, the Cobbers completed 65.4 percent of attempted field goals and kept turnovers down to 13. Prior to that, on Feb. 1 , the Cobbers defeated Carleton 86-53 here. For the majority of the game, the Cobbers kept control. They were up 35-23 going into the half and finished the second half on a shooting spree to ensure the win. Leading the Cobbers for the evening again was Zollar, who had 19 points, including three three-pointers and nine rebounds. "Defensively, we have been playing very well," said Zollar. "Offensively, we finally came together and we were getting good shots." Also assisting in the win were junior center Leah Sonstelie and freshman guard Nikki Vetter. Sonstelie brought in 14 points for the evening, while Vetter added 10. For many Cobber players, this game was unique in that every member of the 12-player team scored for Concordia. Currently, the Cobbers are 10-3, putting them fourth in the league. For the next few games, the Cobbers will not take on any of the traditional powerhouses, but according to Zollar, this is no time to be complacent. "We can't look ahead; we must take each game at a time. Atthis point in the season, it is easy to look too far ahead into the playoffs,: Zollar said, "Offensive execution must be focused on.
