9/13/97 Concordia 28 Gustavus 7

Concordia jumped to a 28-0 lead at the half and coasted to a 28-7 win over Gustavus at Concordia today. The Cobbers improved to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in the MIAC. Gustavus fell to 1-1 overall, 0-1 in the MIAC. 

Concordia got things going on their second possesion, with a 50 yard drive that was capped by a Chris Ohm 2-yard touchdown run with 5:23 left in the first quarter. 

Early in the second quarter the Cobbers drove 87 yards on 10 plays, with Mark Aslakson going in from 1 yard out,  to make it 14-0 with 9:41. left in the second quarter. 

On the next Gustie possession Cobber lineman Jon Jasken tipped a Jim Southworth pass that came down in the hands of Cobber Lance Larson. Larson raced 39 yards for the third Cobber TD. 

Chris Howell capped the Cobber scoring with a 28 yard TD reception from Ethan Pole with 2:46 left in the half. 

Chris Swanson got the only Gustie TD, catching a 15 yard pass from Southworth with 8:39 left in the game. 

For the day, Ethal Pole completed 14 of 20 passes for 221 yards. Tory Langemo caught five of those for 68 yards and Howell caught 4 for 98 yards. 

Dan Steinbeisser led the Cobber ground attack with 73 yards on 20 carries. The Cobbers wracked up 353 yards to the Gusties' 277. 

Southworth was 17 for 34 for 202 yards, with just the one interception, the touchdown by Larson. 

The Cobber defense, giving up just 75 yards on the ground and posting their second consecutive 7 point game,  was again led by Ryan Sannes. Sannes had 7 tackles.

Todayâs game marks the 66th meeting between the Gusties and the Cobbers  in a series that dates to 1923.  Gustavus  holds a 37-26-2 series advantage but the Cobbers have won the last five meetings. 

Last Yearâs Game: 
Concordia jumped to a 24-0 advantage at the half on their way to a 31-6 win at Gustavus.  Eli Schuff ran for 141 yards for the Cobbers. 

1996  Seasons: 
Last year the Gusties finished 2-8, 2-7 in the MIAC. But they were becoming a very good team by the end of the year. 
Concordia finished 6-4-0 overall and fourth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 6-3-0 league record. 

The Coaches: 
Jay Schoenebeck is in his 4th season at Gustavus with a record of  9-22 record, including a 43-0 win last week over Colorado college. Prior to becoming the Gustie head coach, Schoenebeck served as an assistant at Gustavus, Wisconsin and South Dakota State. 
 Jim Chistopherson is in his  29th season as head coach at Concordia with a 197-82-7 record and a 18-10 mark against MSU.  Christopherson has the third most wins of any active coach in NCAA Division III.

A Cobber Running Game? 

 Last week the Cobbers were expected to be dependent on the pass. Instead they got 151 yards from  first-time-starter Dan Steinbeisser.   The experienced Cobber offensive line will now face a team that held Colorado College to just 134 yards of total offense. 

More Game Day Questions 

The Gustie Passing Game vs Untested Cobber Secondary: 
 Last week the Cobbers stuffed the Moorhead State running attack. This week they face one of the MIACâs best  passing attacks. The Gusties may pass 50 times.  Bob Southworth, the Gustie QB,  was 21-34 last week for 312 yards in three quarters of play. 
And the Gustiesâ spread offense, with a mobile Southworth in control,  has enough of a running threat to keep defenses honest. Running back Jeff Seamans had 105 yards on 24 carries last week. 
 In addition, the Cobbers had to replace two injured starters.  Chad Bertram  and Craig Gilbert replace the injured Chris Johnson (knee)  and Jamie Aanenson (ankle) as  starters for todayâs game.  Both Johnson and Aanenson are expected back within a few weeks.

- Look for the Cobber secondary and pass rush to be tested more severely than they were against Morhead state. GAC QB Bob Southworth completed 21 of 34 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters of play last weekend. 
 
Last year the Cobbers beat Gustavus 31-6 in St. Peter. This year Gustavus looks much improved, coming off a 34-0 season opening win over Colorado College. 

9/6/97 Gustavus Football Opens With 34-0 Win Over Colorado College,

St. Peter, Minnesota -- Saturday, September 6) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College football team opened its 1997 season with a 34-0 non-conference win over Colorado College at Lloyd Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter.  Junior quarterback Bob Southworth completed 21 of 34 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters of play in the convincing win.  Southworth threw three touchdown passes to Chris Swansson and one to Mike Johnson. Senior running back Jeff Seamans gave the Gusties a balanced offensive attack rushing for 105 yards on 24 carries.  Defensively, Gustavus held Colorado College to 134 yards of total offense (74 passing and 60 rushing) allowing only four first downs in the contest. 
        After leading 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Gusties broke the game open in the second quarter with Bob Southworth throwing three of his four touchdown passes.  Southworth gave the Gusties a 10-0 lead with a 9-yard strike to Mike Johnson at 13:20, followed by a 19-yard completion to Chris Swansson at 8:24 and finishing with a 11-yard aerial again to Swansson with :36 seconds remaining.  Gustavus led 24-0 at halftime. 
        The Gustavus defensive line shut the Colorado College rushing game down limiting the Tigers to 60 yards on 28 carries in the game.  In the second half, the Gusties held the Tigers to one yard rushing on 13 carries. Gustavus recorded eight sacks in the game to set a new single game school record. 
        The Colorado College offense was led by senior tailback Chris Williams who rushed 15 times for 73 yards including a 56-yard carry in the first half.  Junior quarterback Michael Johnson completed 13 of 25 passes for 72 yards. 
        Gustavus (1-0) will open MIAC play at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota next Saturday at 1:00 pm.  Colorado College (0-1) plays at Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) next Saturday at 7:00 pm (PDT).
