It's All Relative!
The Concordia fall athletic teams were blessed with a glorious weekend to celebrate with their families. Surrounded by the annual Family Weekend festivitites, the Cobbers managed to pull off a few surprises and show why the spirit of the maroon and gold is alive and well in 2003. The biggest surprise of the weekend came just east of the football field where the women's soccer team upset perennial league power Gustavus 1-0. It was the first time in 15 years that the Cobbers have beaten the Gusties. Despite close losses and other "almosts", the weekend was a great showcase for all the right reasons to support college athletics and in the end "a good time was had by all."

This week will provide the Concordia teams the chance to make a run towards the top of the MIAC. Now that the initial period of playing league games has worn off, it is time to get down to the nitty gritty of positioning for the postseason.

It was a case of near misses and missed opportunities for the Cobber football team. Concordia played a key early season matchup against Bethel last Saturday and came away on the wrong side of the 36-19 score. Terryy Horan's crew had several opportunities in the first half to extend their early lead but due to turnovers and other intangibles, Concordia let Bethel back in the game and slowly pull away in the second half.

The Cobbers scored the first points of the game and the last points of the game but in between it was all Bethel. The story of the game was the fact that Concordia drove the ball into Bethel territory eight times, but only converted on three of the opportunities. The Cobbers also committed three costly turnovers in the game and lost for the first time all season. Concordia now stands at 1-1 in the conference and 2-1 overall.

The usual suspects came to the forefront for the Concordia offense and defense. Ryan Hebrink (Sr., Sacred Heart, Minn/R-C-W HS) finished the game 16-for-30 for 229 yards in passing and also contributed 51 yards on the ground. Bobby Clark (Sr., Seeley-Swan, Mont./Seeley Swan HS) carried the ball 18 times for 71 yards. The defense was led by cornerback Josh Vickerman (Sr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had four solo tackles and assisted on five others, while Doug Runke (Jr., Owatonna,
