Women's golf team wraps up successful season
Although the young Cobber women golfers had their best season ever, winning five of their six meets, there is no national post-season tournament for them to play in because of the elimination of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW).
During the season the women set Concordia records for a team stroke average of 342, which is 14 better than last year's mark, and for a single meet score of 332 set at the _ Dakota State Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D., and again at the South Dakota State Invitational in Brookings, S.D.
Leading the Cobbers throughout 1982 was senior Karna Johnson from Alexandria, Minn., who held an 18-hole average of 82.7; earned medalist honors for taking first place at the Briar Cliff Invitational in Sioux City, Iowa; and never finished below fourth place in any of the other five tournaments.
Annette Haugstul, a sophomore from Fosston, Minn., also had an outstanding year. Averaging 83.4 shots per 18 holes, Raugstul pushed Johnson the entire season and finished among the top five in all but one meet.
Close behind in the individual stroke average category were sophomore Jill Olafson from Wadena, Minn., and freshman Melissa Viker from Mahnomen, Minn., with 85.5 - and 86.5 averages respectively.
According to Coach Duane Siverson, when the AIAW folded, the golf squad had to join either Division II or III of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) or the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics, none of which holds a national meet. The team chose the NCAA Division III.
Although the Cobbers cannot compete as a team in post- season tournaments,
five individuals from Division III schools will be chosen to play in the
NCAA Division I tournament next spring. Both Johnson and Haugstul
stand a good chance of being selected, according to Siverson.
All-American Johnson winds up shining Cobber golf career
A couple of years ago Karna Johnson, in her own words, "wasn't that great a golfer."
But in the last two seasons, Johnson, a senior from Alexandria, Minn., has compiled a strong record as the number one.
She has earned All-American honors once, All-Region twice, and All-State once.
In the recently-completed fall season, Johnson averaged 82 strokes for 18 holes on a team that won five of its six meets and set a school record of 332 for an 18 hole tournament.
Johnson, along with sophomore Annette Haugstul, who averaged an 83, have a chance to play in the NCAA Division I national tournament next spring. Since Divisions II and III don't have national tournaments due to the lack of teams, the top five individuals from those two divisions are chosen to complete the Division I tourmament field.
The players will be selected Jan. 1 after southern schools have completed their seasons and the scores have been fed into a computer, according to Siverson, Concordia women's golf coach.
"Karna's and Annette's scores compare very well nationally," Siverson said. "It depends on how many schools send in scores."
Karna Johnson began golfing in the junior program at Alexandria, whish is known for producing some of the best amateur golfers in Minnesota.
Twice a week throughout the summer juniors play at the local country club. Players such as Tom Lehmann, who is now trying to earn a spot on the professional tour, Lisa Kluver, who golfed at the University of Minnesota, and Kris Elton, a national champion two years ago while at Concordia, were in the program with Johnson.
In high school, Johnson continued playing with Kluver and Elton and thier team won consecutive state meets.
"I was just one of the bottom players," she said. "It was exciting, though."
But from the watching her teamates, Johnson set high goals for herself.
"I had not been an excellent golfer but I'd palyed with Kris Elton and Luis Kluver all my life, so I'd set pretty high standards for myself," she said. "It's only been in the last couple of years that I've been able to put my game together. I've played more in the summer and benefitted from better college competition."
(Earlier in the season )
By winning their fifth tournament of September last week, the women's golf team closed their fall season on a positive note the Cobbers won the eight team Moorhead State Invitational, held last Friday in Ortonville, Minn., with a team score of 333. South Dakota State was second to the Cobbers for the fifth time this season, finishing with a 337. North Dakota shot 340 to wind up in third place.
The Ortonville meet marked the final tournament for Karna Johnson, the
No. 1 player and only senior on the team. Johnson has earned All-Region
honors twice and All-American one season.
Individually, the meet was a satisfying conclusion for Johnson, who
finished second with an 81. What made the finish outstanding, according
to Siverson, was that she edged Ann Zenk, the No. 1 golfer for SDSU.
"Ann is considered the most consistent player and probably the best player in all of our tournaments," said Siverson. "Beating Ann by one stroke is gratifying in itself."
Jill Olarson of Concordia shot an 82 to finish third overall after beating Diane Mukai of UND and Zenk in a playoff. Melissa Viker shot an 84, and Annette Haugstul finished at 86 yo round out the team scoring.
Next May the Cobbers will enter the state meet, which they won last year en route to a fifth place finish in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women national tornament.
As of now, though, there is no national meet due to the folding of the
AIAW.
For the second consecutive year, the Cobber women's golf team won the state golf title of the Minnesota Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, held May 2-3 at Island View Country Club in Waconia, Minn.
Concordia ended the tournament with a two-day combined team score of 717, which was 10 strokes better than runner- up Mankato (Minn.) State University.
Karna Johnson ('83) from Alexandria, Minn., who carried an 18-hole average of 82.7 from the fall season, placed third in the tournament with a score of 170. Johnson was two strokes back of a two-way tie for first place between Tammi Rostvold of Mankato State and Barb Ward of Winona (Minn.) State University. Rostvold went on to win in a one-hole playoff.
Other members of the Concordia squad to place were Annette Haugstul, a sophomore from Fosston, Minn., sixth at 178; Melissa Viker, a freshman from Mahnomen, Minn., 11th at 182; and Cindy Johnson, a sophomore from Anoka, Minn., 14th at 187.
During the fall season, the women set Concordia records for a team-stroke
average of 342, which is 14 better than last year's mark, and for a single
meet score of 332 set at the Dakota State Invitational in Sioux Falls,
S.D., and again at the South Dakota State Invita tional in Brookings. The
Cobber women won six of the eight tournaments they were in.
