St. Thomas Men's Hockey ranked No. 3 in nation
*The Toms, ranked third nationally in NCAA Division III, are unbeaten in MIAC men's hockey at 5-0-1 after last weekend's sweep of Gustavus (5-0 in St. Peter, 5-2 at home). UST scored the first 10 gaosl of the series and had three consecutive short-handed goals in the second game.
*In their last 14 MIAC games dating back to last season, the Toms are 12-0-2. The Toms are 12-1-2 overall.
*UST's Brad Moore (FR-Lakeville) was named MIAC Player of the Week after recording a shutout among his two complete-game wins over the Gusties. Moore stopped all 18 shots Friday and 21 of 23 Saturday. In MIAC play, he's 5-0 with two shutouts and a .949 save percentage and 1.40 GAA. On the season, he's 11-0-1 with a .908 save percentage, a 2.40 GAA and three shutouts.
*UST is 6-1-1 against Wisconsin teams, tying St. Norbert on the road and losing at home to UW-Eau Claire Jan. 8 6-3. The've beated UW-River Falls twice (4-0, 5-4 OT) and scored an 8-5 win at UW-Stevens Point Jan. 4. In that win, Tony Lawrence (SO-White Bear Lake) scored six points, including consecutive short-handed goals early in the third-period that erased a 5-4 Pointer lead.
*The Toms are 19-2-4 in their last 25 games dating back to last season, when they won the MIAC regular-season and tournament titles and reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
*The 12-1-2 record marks the best start for UST in the 13-year career of Coach Terry Skrypek, who's now 235-108-23 at St. Thomas. Including a 17-year coaching career at Hill-Murray High, Skrypek's teams have never had a losing season in his 30 years, with 560 wins.
*The Toms have won or shared the MIAC regular-season championship nine of the last 11 seasons.
*UST's Steve Aronson (SR-Minnetonka), on pace to win All-America honors for the third consecutive season, had a goal and three assists vs. the Gusties to move to 34 points on the season and 187 career points -- ninth on the all-time MIAC list. He needs four points at Concordia to move into sixth place. He's on pace to become just the fourth MIAC player to surpass 200 career points.
*Lawrence has scored 26 points in his last 10 games.
*Brian Bolf (SR-Hibbing), who led the MIAC in scoring in 1997-98, has 23 points this season and 130 in just three seasons with the Tommies.
*The Toms play a key series
next weekend at Concordia-Moorhead -- Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at
2 p.m. They have five MIAC series to play. The teams met in the MIAC tourney
finals last year with a 1-1 tie and a hard-fought 5-2 UST win. They split
a close series in November 1998 in St. Paul.
