Season Outlook and Notes:
Season Preview:
The 1999 Hamline University Football Fighting Pipers hope the sports
adage that you win with seniors holds true. Following a difficult
2-8 season the Pipers charge into the 99 season with 24 seniors and a
wealth of experience. Twenty-one year veteran head coach Dick Tressel
made the following statement. If our seniors act on their wisdom
and better prepare for the rigors of our schedule, football 99 could be
fun! We plan to be the seasons most improved NCAA III football team.
The battle starts in the trenches where the Pipers are well stocked with veterans. Eight lettermen return on the offensive front and six lettermen return on the D line. Leading the defensive charge will be three year lettermen Nathan Schneeberger and Cory Molenaar (sack leader, All-MIAC, Tri-Captain-elect). These men embody relentless pursuit and toughness that will hopefully spread throughout the Piper defense. Offensive linemen Dominic DeFrance (Tri-Captain-elect, 5'11", 240#) and Seth Leiffort (6'2", 231#) have been moving opponents for the previous two years. The veteran status of the O line should lead to consistent play from tackle to tackle.
Perimeter play must drastically improve for Hamline to win in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the abilities seem to be available -the plays need to be made! Tim Couchman (JR, QB) and Brian Swanson (SR, FB) are strengths to which the offense can turn. However a letterman returns at every ball handling position. On the defensive perimeter inside linebacker is exciting. Kris Staples (Tri-Captain-elect, All-MIAC) and Brian Fearing (JR) are big play people! They should be the foundation from which Hamline defensive perimeter play can improve.
The kicking game portion of Piper Football should be a plus in 1999.
Steve Koehn (SR) returns to punt and placekick. Steve holds the HU
record for the longest punt (79 yards) and longest FG (46 yards).
This should be a big play opportunity for Hamline.
