New Structure:
There's only one bye per region with 28 teams. Seven bids per
bracket (4 brackets/regions), so four No. 1s will have a bye Nov. 20. Then
2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5 on Nov. 20.
15 spots of the bracket will be taken up by Automatic Qualifiers. There are 5 AQs in the North, 4 AQs in the West, 4 in the South and 2 AQs in the East. 9 Spots in the bracket will be taken by Independents and Non-AQ conferences and 4 spots will be for those from AQ conferences that are the conference champion. Berths from Pool B and C will be selected on a national basis, using regional selection criteria. Geographic Proximity will probably take precedence over seeding. That means that because of travel limitations we may have two teams facing each other that are closer in seeding than what you would expect because of the travel limitations.
Here are the Region by Region breakdowns with AQ Conferences and the number of teams for evaluation in Pool B (independents and non-qualifying confs)
West - Iowa, Midwest, MIAC, WIAC -
11 teams in pool B
East - New England Football Conf., Freedom Football Conf. - (NESCAC
not participating) -
18 teams in Pool B
South - Centennial, ODAC, MAC, SCAC -
30 Teams in Pool B
North - Ohio, North Coast, MIAA, Heartland, College Conf of Illinois
and Wisconsin -
14 Teams in Pool B
MIAC Football Automatic Qualifier Tie breaker
MIAC Manual 6.1.1 Policy for Tie Breaker:
Ties will be broken in order to select the automatic qualifier to the
NCAA playoffs as follows: (added 5/99)
1. Head to Head competition.
2. If 3 or more teams are tied, the team that has most recently
been to the playoffs will be eliminated. Then it goes back to head
to head competition with the remaining teams.
3. Coin flip, if head to head competition and recent playoff
appearances do not solve the tie.
