Philosophy Statement
Intercollegiate athletics provides an important element to the educational process for many students at Concordia College. As a department, we adhere to and support the mission of the college "to influence the affairs of the world by sending into society thoughtful and informed men and women dedicated to the Christian life."
Concordia is committed to providing our student-athletes with the opportunity for the best possible athletic and educational experience. We have an obligation to provide essential leadership by employing coaches who believe in the benefits of the game for the participants and whose interest is for their development as people as well as athletes. This includes a concern for their academic progress, providing the opportunity to reveal their potential contribution for the team, and nurturing their values. We believe in participation and encourage large squads, including junior varsity programs, when facilities and numbers permit. However, this does not deter our desire to win, and we will continue to strive for recognition at the Conference and National level.
In return, the student-athlete has responsibilities to the athletic program and the college. The athletes must participate according to MIAC and NCAA rules and regulations, and also display loyalty and respect to their teammates, coaches, and the college. They must comply with college and departmental policies, meet all academic requirements, compete with honesty and good sportsmanship, and contribute to the best of their ability to the success of the team.
Meeting mutual responsibilities is a key ingredient to the maintenance
of a quality and distinctive athletic program at Concordia College.
