Football falls to big play
So far this season, the big play has killed the Concordia football team. Last Saturday's game against Gustavus was no different. This time, Gustavus
used big plays from its defense and special teams to pull out a 39-22 victory
before an excited homecoming crowd in St.
"We don't get off to really great starts," said senior Joel Nelson. "When we’re down by ten points, we have a different game plan, and we get out of our rhythm." The Cobbers would battle back though, as Hertel connected with Adam
Strainer for a 56-yard touchdown pass, and Crouse added an 11-yard TD run,
to cut the Gustavus lead to 26-22 at the half.
For the game, Crouse led the Cobbers with 15 carries for 109 yards,
while Strainer added 5 catches for 125 yards.
"It's a big disappointment," Nelson said. "We worked hard all last year and in the off-season to build up to our goal of an MIAC title. We're just going to play to have fun." The Cobbers next action will be at 1 pm this Saturday, Oct. 7, as they take on Hamline at Concordia’s Homecoming. | 2000

Soccer teams going in different directions
A roller coaster ride.
The Cobber men are sitting atop the MIAC with a 3-0 record after their 1-0 win over Carleton on Saturday. The women, however, have not fared so well, and after their 2-1 loss to Carleton on Friday, are 0-3 in the MIAC and second to last in the conference standings. For the men, the win over Carleton continued a trend of late-game heroics. Junior Chance Buzzel's goal in the game's 79th minute made this the third straight game in which the Cobbers have either tied the score or taken the lead in the final 11 minutes of regulation. At the time of Buzzel's kick, the Cobbers were short handed because of an earlier red card violation. But scrappiness filled the void as Buzzel scored amidst a scramble of bodies in front of the Carleton goal. Five players found themselves on the ground inside the six-yard box, and somehow the ball found its way into the net. The Cobbers have four consecutive one-goal victories. Their record is 6-2-1 overall. The men may be riding high, but Concordia's women are facing a tough climb up the conference hill after losing their third straight game in the MIAC. The Cobbers scored first against Carleton, with sophomore Meghan Hansen scoring her first goal of the year at 49:43. Concordia held its lead for ten minutes until Carleton's Morgan Russell-Dempsey, off a pass from Mutebi Birungi, beamed the ball into the Cobber net. Birungi later produced the game winner with just under 14 minutes left to play, finding herself alone in front of the net and forcing a kick past a diving Concordia goalkeeper, junior Kathy Braun. The loss was their second in a row by only one goal. “It was another frustrating loss,” said sophomore Meghan Hansen. “We must have hit the post three times . . . Things just weren’t going our way.” Hansen notes that the team has a tendency to get down on itself when the other team scores, and that they must do a better job of focusing in such situations. The women's Tuesday game against the University of Minnesota-Moorhead was postponed until Tuesday, October 10, at 4:30 p.m. The Cobbers now stand at 5-4-0 on the season. Concordia travels to Winona tomorrow to play St. Mary's. The women start at noon, with the men afterwards at 2. On Sunday, both teams continue their homecoming celebration, hosting
the Alumni in their annual match-up. The women open at 1 p.m. and
the men follow at 3.

Volleyball bumped around in MIAC
Coming off their first place finish at the Concordia Tournament the Cobbers struggled through a challenging week of volleyball, dropping three straight games. "St. Thomas, St. Olaf, and St. Mary's are all up in the top of the conference,"
said senior Stacy Davis. "It was a tough week."
On Friday night the Cobbers faced off against the Olies for an exciting
match up. Concordia edged St. Olaf in the first game 15-12. Then the Oles
pulled ahead in the second and third games to win 15-9 and 15-11. The Cobbers
flew past St. Olaf in the fourth game 15-2, but the fifth game left Concordia
short. St. Olaf had the win by a 15-13 score.
Saturday, the Cobbers went into action yet again, hoping to best St.
Mary's. But Concordia was disappointed as St. Mary's swept the Cobbers
in three straight games 8-15, 7-15, and 7-15.
"We are working on getting stopped and explosive movement to the ball," Davis said. "We play really good defense and if we could improve, we would be hard to stop." The Cobbers now look ahead. Davis sees success in her teammates, describing
the team as hard working, dedicated, and ready to have some fun.
On Tuesday, however, Concordia returned to the win column, handing Bethel its first conference loss this season. Concordia is now10-9 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.
