Jr. Fargo, ND Scored the game winning goal in overtime in Concordia's 2-1 come from behind victory over St. Thomas |
9/26 Concordia Comes From Behind to Win in Overtime 2-1.
Kevin Roos (Jr., Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.), scored the game
winning goal at 17:19 into overtime to cap Concordia's 2-1 come from behind
victory over St. Thomas. St. Thomas took the lead in the first half when
Luis Cunha stole the ball from the Cobber defense and put the ball behind
Kris Overby (Fr.,
Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.) with a far post shot. The scored
remained in favor of the Tommies until 86:35 when Jerry Nathan (Fr., Fargo
ND, Fargo South H.S.) finished off a cross from Jason VanValkenburg (Fr.,
Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.). That set the stage for the Kevin Roos who
stripped the ball from a St. Thomas defender, found the keeper off his
line and proceeded to float the ball into the net for the Cobber victory.
With the win the Concordia improves to 2-0 in the MIAC and 5-2-1. St. Thomas
falls to 1-2 in the MIAC and 5-3-0 overall. Concordia plays host to Carleton
on Saturday at
2:00.

The Headline:
Cobbers Look To Continue Winning Ways
The Teams :
Concordia (4-2-1, 1-0)
The Cobbers are coming off of a big win on Saturday over nationally
ranked (#14) Gustavus.
In that game the Cobbers held tight defensively and waited until the
79th minute before scoring the go-ahead goal. First year player Jerry Nathan
(Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.) took a picture perfect pass from Gennard Lombardozzi
(Jr., Billings MT, Billings West H.S.) and slotted the ball just
inside the post for the 1-0 victory. The Cobbers will look to extend their
win streak to three games today.
The game against St. Thomas is the second of a three-game homestand
to start MIAC play. The final game will be on Saturday at 2:00 against
Carleton.
St. Thomas (5-2-0, 1-1)
The Tommies are also coming off two consecutive wins. This past weekend
they defeated Hamline 4-3 in OT and on Sunday they downed Coe College
(IA) 2-1. St. Thomas boasts a high octane offense having scored 17 goals
in their 7 games this year. The leading scorer for St. Thomas is Jason
English (Sr. Burnsville) who leads the team with three goals and three
assists. The Tommies are coached by Denzil Lue, who recently became only
the second coach in the MIAC to win 200 games for a career. The other coach
to obtain that milestone is Pat Haws from St. John's.
The History:
Concordia and St. Thomas have faced each other 13 times since Concordia
started the men's soccer program, with St. Thomas holding the edge with
an 8-4-1 record. In the last four years Concordia has won three times and
three games have been decided by one goal.
4 Years Ago: Concordia 1 St. Thomas 0
In 1996 Concordia was in the midst of their best season, and fought
off a tough St. Thomas team 1-0.
Jim Stone scored the lone goal of the game when he stole the ball at
the top of the Tommie box and looped a shot over goalkeeper Joe Warren
(who would later go on to play for the MN Thunder) just before half time.
Jim Stone is now an assistant coach for Augsburg, and he and his wife are
expecting their first child in December.
