Blasts St. Olaf 8-0.
Concordia exploded
for four goals in the second period, including two shorthanded, and went
on to blast St. Olaf 8-0. The Cobbers received goals from eight different
players, and goaltender Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) stopped all
26 shotshe faced to record his first shutout on the season. The game was
lengthened by penalties as the two teams combined for 54 minutes of penalties
despite a relatively clean, outbreak-free game.
Both teams came into the game unbeaten on the season, and early on the game seemed destined to be close as St.Olaf goalie Jake Bullard (So., Bloomington) made several key saves as Concordia failed to produce on two power play opportunities. On the third power play of the period, Brian Nelson (So., Moorhead, MN) jammed home a rebound at 10:16 and the period ended 1-0.
In the second period Concordia was penalized four times and converted shorthanded goals on two penalty kills to put the game out of reach. At 12:23, Mark Schiller (Sr., Detroit Lakes, MN) finished off a rush from the Cobbers blue line as he swatted his own rebound out of mid air after taking a pass from Jon Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, MN). Three minutes later Tranby once again gained possesion on the penalty kill at his own blue line, and this time he fed captain Mike Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) who raced past the Ole defense and beat Bullard on the backhand.
Concordia proceeded
to add four more goals and Howard thwarted several St. Olaf power play
chances in the third period to post his ninth career shutout. The Cobbers
successfully killed all six power play opportunities for St. Olaf.Wiht
the victory Concordia moves into first place in the MIAC with a record
of 2-0-1 while St. Olaf drops their first game and slides to 2-1-0.

Concordia is coming
off a 3 point series with St. Mary's last weekend. In Friday's game the
Cobbers pulled off a late game rally to tie the score 3-3 and then skated
to a scoreless overtime period. Concordia was down 3-1 with under two minutes
to play when Nick Bourdon (Sr., Fargo, ND) scored to cut the lead to one
and then with just nine seconds to go Tony Castaneda (So., Moorhead, MN)
on loan from the soccer team, scored to force overtime. In Saturday's game
the Cobbers used the momentum gained in the late stages of Friday's game
to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead and then coast to the 5-2 victory.
Last year's All-American goalie Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA)
stopped 66 out of the 70 shots he faced.
St. Olaf (2-0
in the MIAC, 2-0 Overall)
St. Olaf is coming
off a sweep of Gustavus. In that series they used their own late game heroics.
In Friday's game St. Olaf was down 2-0 with 12 minutes to play and proceeded
to score two goals to send the game into overtime. With 36 seconds left
in the extra period the Oles went a man down because of an unsporstmanlike
conduct penalty only to have Adam Will (Sr., White Bear Lake, MN) score
a short handed goal with one second to go. On Saturday St. Olaf scored
two goals in the second period and went on to win 3-1. In the series goalie
Jake Bullard (So., Bloomington, MN) stopped 39 out of the 42 shots he faced.
The History:
Concordia leads
the Series 34 26 4, the series started in 1955.
Last year, at Northfield,
Concordia won the first game 3-2 and the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie
in the second game.
