1/20 Concordia Shuts Out Augsburg
1-0, Gains Series Split.
Concordia went back to the old reliables - goaltending, defense and
opportunistic scoring to beat Augsburg 1-0. The victory gives the Cobbers
a split in the weekend series and keeps them in first place in the MIAC.
Andy Crook (So., Elk River, MN) scored his first goal of the season in
the first period and All-American Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) made
it stand up by posting his fourth shutout of the season.
Crook scored at the 5:28 mark of the first period on a feed from Aaron Marsh (So., Summerland, British Columbia) after that both teams tightened their defense and limited the number of shots on net. Augsburg could only crack the Concordia defense for 22 shots on goal, while the Cobbers settled for a workman-like 35 shots. Despite the low number of shots, both teams had several good chances to score but could not beat either goalie. Howard won the duel of the MIAC's top tenders by stopping all 22 shots he faced, while Augsburg goalie Ryan McIntosh (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced.
The win gives Concordia two more points in the MIAC standings, and provides them with a two point lead with six games left. They are currently 7-2-1 in league play and 8-6-2 overall. Augsburg stumbles back and falls to 3-41 in the MIAC and 6-8-2 overall. The Cobbers play a non-conference game on Wednesday, January 24th at UM-Crookston at 7:30. After the game with Crookston, the Cobbers will play host to St. John's for a weekend series on Friday January 26th at 7:00 and Saturday January 27th at 2:00.
