1/26 Concordia Stumbles Against
St. John's 3-2.
Concordia gave up two goals in 1:17 in the third period, and stumbled
against St. John's 3-2.The two teams were tied after two periods before
the Johnnies broke free with the two-goal outburst. The Cobbers narrowed
the gap at the 13:03 mark, but could not put the tying goal on the board.
St. John's scored first when Rick Talbot took a feed from Joel Starke and beat Concordia netminder Bryan Howard (Gold River, CA)That goal would stand until the 19:00 mark of the second period when Toby Schneider (Jr., Grand Forks, ND) tied the game at one. Both team threatened early in the third before St. John's scored twice in the pivotal 1:27. John Konrad and Shane Taylor made the most of a defensive lapse, and gave the Johnnies the lead they would not relinquish. The Cobbers clawed back to within one when Schneider netted his second goal of the night. After that point St. John's goalie Adam Laaksonen shut the door and recorded the win. Laaksonen finished the game with 24 saves while Howard had 32.
Concordia loses the chance to gain grounf on the rest of the league,
and falls to 7-3-1 in the MIAC and 9-7-2 overall. The Johnnies gain two
valuable points and rise to 5-3-1 and 8-9-1. The two teams finish the series
tomorrow at 2:00 at the Moorhead Sports Center.

The Headline: There's No Place Like Home
The Teams:
Concordia (7-2-1 in the MIAC, 9-6-2 Overall)
After 48 days, 2 holidays and 7 games Concordia finally gets
to play a home game. In that stretch the Cobbers were 4-3 and held onto
the top spot in the MIAC. They now finish the season at home by playing
six games in the MIAC, and two non-conference games against UM-Crookston.
Concordia is coming off a midweek win over Crookston 6-3. In that game the Cobbers scored three goals in the second period to put the game out of reach. Last weekend the Cobbers came away with a key split at Augsburg. They lost on Friday night, in an uncharacteristic high-scoring affair 5-4. However, on Saturday they returned to the old reliables and won in a defensive battle 1-0.
Concordia is using "offense by committee" this season as they have 11
players with at least 5 points. Leading the way is senior captain Mike
Gast (Fargo, ND), who has 12 points. He is currently 10th in the
MIAC in scoring. Like a broken record, goaltender Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold
River, CA) continues to dominate the MIAC between the pipes. He is leading
the league in wins, goals against and save percentage. On Saturday he added
to his school record by posting his 11th career shutout. He also holds
school records in wins, save percentage and goals against.
St. John’s (4-3-1 in the MIAC, 7-9-1 Overall)
St. John's is battling through a roller coaster year. They started
the season by getting swept by Bethel, and then taking three out of four
points from arch rival St. Thomas. Since then they have split with Augsburg
and last weekend they swept Gustavus. The Johnnies are currently in fourth
place in the MIAC.
St. John's is led by returning All-MIAC Honorable Mention player Jake Froiland (Jr., Andover, MN). He has 8 goals and 9 assists on the year. Goaltender Rick Gregory (Flin Flon, Man) is third in the league in goaltending statistics.
After this weekend St. John's will finish the MIAC with series against Hamline, St. Mary's and St. Olaf. They have made the MIAC playoffs the last five seasons.
The History: Concordia Leads the Series
46-35-8
Last year the Cobbers swept the series at the National Hockey Center
in St. Cloud. In the first game, a 4-3 victory, Derek Selch (Winnipeg,
Man) scored two goals including the game-winner and also added an assist.
In the second game Concordia jumped to a 4-0 lead, and cruised to a 9-3
decision. Brady Burgess (Jr., Moorhead, MN) had two goals and a helper.
The first game between the two teams took place in 1947. St. John's was
helped by a stifling defense and won 4-0.
