2/7 Concordia Comes Back to Beat
UM-Crookston 5-4.
Concordia overcame a two-goal deficit in the last 22 minutes of the
game to down UM-Crookston 5-4. Trailing 4-2 with two minutes left in the
second period, the Cobbers received goals from Toby Schneider (Jr., Grand
Forks, ND), Jon Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, MN) and Brad Kennedy (So, Mistatim,
SASK) to post their twelfth win of the season.
Concordia started the game with a bang by scoring two goals in the first :35 seconds. Mike Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season at the 28 second mark, and then seven seconds later Brady Burgess (Jr., Moorhead, MN) gave the Cobbers a quick two-goal lead. The two goals in 35 seconds is a school record for the fastest two goals to start a game. Crookston rallied in the next five minutes and finally got on the board when Cory Robinson scored on a shot from past the blueline. The Golden Eagles proceeded to gain momentum and reeled off the next three goals.
Concordia finally scored two timely third period goals to take the win. It is the first time all season that the Cobbers have won when trailing after two periods. Jason Stephen (Jr., Fauquier, BC) and Jim Richards (So., Moorhead, MN) split the goaltending duties for Concordia. Stephen entered midway throught the second period and stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced to pick up his first college victory. Jeff Horner went all the way in the net for Crookston and made 34 saves in the game.
The win improves the Cobbers record to 12-8-2 on the year, while Crookston
falls to 15-6-1. The two teams will face-off again next Wednesday night
when they complete their three-game series for the season.

Concordia vs. UM-Crookston Game Day Preview
The Headline: Concordia Looks to Finish
The Teams: Concordia (9-4-1 in the MIAC,
11-8-2 Overall)
Concordia takes a break from MIAC play and will square off against
UM-Crookston in a pair of midweek games. With two weeks left in the regular
season, the Cobbers have a chance to win the MIAC championship or could
fall all the way to fifth place and miss the playoffs. Last weekend Concordia
split their fourth consecutive series. On Friday night they stumbled through
the second period and lost to Gustavus 4-2. On Saturday they bolted to
a 4-1 lead and hung on for a 4-3 victory. The culprit in the past split
frenzy has been the lack of timely scoring. Over the past four series,
the lack of third period scoring continues to haunt Concordia. In the crucial
four losses, the Cobbers have been behind after two periods three times
and lost every single game. In the other loss, the Cobbers were tied after
two periods and lost the game in the third. Over the past eight games Concordia
has scored only eight goals in the third period. After the twin home games
with Crookston the Cobbers will close the regular season with a home series
against Hamline. If they win one game, they clinch a playoff spot. If they
sweep and Bethel and St. Thomas split their series this weekend then Concordia
will have at least a share of the title. Here is a team-by-team breakdown
of the other four MIAC teams that have a chance to make the playoffs.
St. Thomas: One series left against Bethel. They sweep and they
win their fourth consecutive MIAC title and 11th in 13 years. One win and
they clinch a playoff spot. If they are swept they could miss the playoffs
entirely.
Bethel: Two series left, this weekend against St. Thomas and
next weekend against Augsburg. If they win all four, they will claim their
first ever MIAC title. Any other combination opens up endless possibilities.
Augsburg: One of the hottest teams in the MIAC right now, they
have won four straight. They have two series left. This weekend they play
St. Olaf and then follow that with a series against Bethel. They could
finish as high as second or drop out of the playoff picture.
St. John's: They have the easiest schedule of the four teams.
They have two series left. A rare two game homestand against St. Mary's
this weekend, and then they play St. Olaf in the season finale. Like Augsburg,
they could finish second or fifth.
UM-Crookston (11-0-1 in the MCHA, 15-5-1 Overall)
Crookston comes into tonight's game undefeated in the Midwest Collegiate
Hockey Association (MCHA). The MCHA is in the second year of existence.
The teams that comprise the league are; Crookston, Marian, Northland, Milwaukee
School of Engineering and Lawrence. The Golden Eagles won the inaugural
championship last year. They have already clinched the title this year,
and have yet to lose a conference game. They are 4-5-1 in non-conference
action, with all five losses coming at the hands of MIAC or NCHA teams.
Crookston has a well-balanced offensive attack with six players having
20 or more points on the season. The team leader is Kelly Kilgore
(Sr., Grand Forks, ND) who has 30 points in 21 games. He was a first team
All-MCHA player last year. Last week's MCHA player of the week was the
Golden Eagles' senior forward Jacob Draeger (Roseau, MN). He had one goal
and four assists in their sweep over Milwaukee School of Engineering.
The MCHA provides some interesting travel schedules. The longest trip Crookston
will take this year is to Milwaukee, a short 624 mile jaunt.
The History: The Series is Tied 8-8-1.
Tonight's game will decide who takes the lead in the series. The Cobbers
have dominated the matchup in the last few years. Since the 1997-98
season the Cobbers have posted a 5-1 record. The Golden Eagles owned the
series from 1994 through 1996, when they won six consecutive times. Concordia
won 6-3 in their last meeting on January 24th. In that game the Cobbers
scored three goals in the second period to take control of the game. Mark
Schiller scored two of the three goals in that frame, and Toby Schneider
scored a decisive shorthanded goal. The first meeting between the two teams
was in 1948 when Crookston won 10-5
