2/14 Concordia Loses to UM-Crookston
4-2.
Concordia tried to duplicate the script from last week's win over UM-Crookston,
but failed to overcome the two-goal deficit and lost 4-2. Last week the
Cobbers stormed back in the third period to erase the two-goal margin and
pull out the victory. This time there would be no magic as the Golden Eagles
beat Concordia for the first time in four tries.
Concordia (12-9-2) went ahead late in the first period on Brad Kennedy's
(So., Mistatim, SASK) third goal of the year at 14:49. The lead lasted
only 1:03 as UM-Crookston (16-6-1) stormed into the zone and Cory Robinson
was able to beat Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA) for the tying goal.
The second period proved to be the downfall fo Concordia as they gave up
two goals on eight shots. The Golden Eagles scored immediately after coming
out of the dressing room, and the Cobbers were down 2-1 with only 1:31
gone in the period. The two teams generated little offense, as Concordia
could only come away with seven shots in the middle frame. Crookston made
it a two-goal cushion midway through the period when Kelly Kilgore, the
Golden Eagles' leading scorer, put home his ninth goal of the year.
Concordia played with more urgency in the third, and was able to get an early goal to put pressure on Crookston's goaltender Jeff Horner. Brady Burgess (Jr., Moorhead, MN) scored on the power play at 3:28, and the Cobbers were poised for another third period rally. The tying goal never materialized, and Scott Swenson added an empty net goal for Crookston to make the final score 4-2. The Cobbers held a 28-20 advantage in shots on goal for the game.
Concordia will finish the MIAC regular season this weekend when they host Hamline on Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday at 2:00. The Cobbers, with a sweep, will finish second and have a first round home playoff series. Any combination of losses and Concordia could finish as low as fourth place.

The Headline: Concordia - Crookston Part III: Cobbers Go For the Series Sweep

1/24 Concordia Upends UM-Crookston 6-3.
Concordia used a three-goal second period to pull away from UM-Crookston
and win 6-3. Mark Schiller's (Sr., Detroit Lakes, MN) two goals in the
middle period proved to be the game-winning offense for the Cobbers,
as they won for the ninth time this season. Concordia (9-6-2) trailed 2-1
after the first period as the Golden Eagles (12-4-1) scored first and last
in the period. After the first intermission the Cobber defense tightened
and allowed only 19 shots the rest of the game. In the deciding period,
Schiller opened the scoring, and tied the game, at 11:56 on an assist
from Jon Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, MN). Toby Schneider (Jr., Grand Forks,
ND) scored shorthanded at 14:20 to give Concordia the lead, and the Cobbers
would never look back. Schiller finished the period by netting his second
goal of the night at 15:37. Crookston came out and scored first in the
third period, only to be answered by two more goals from Concordia. Finishing
the scoresheet for the Cobbers was Treavor Peterson (So., Thief River Falls,
MN) and Aaron Marsh (So., Summerland, BC). Concordia outshot Crookston
31-29. Senior goaltender Bryan
Howard (Gold River, CA) made 26 and collected his ninth win of the
season.
2/7 Concordia Comes Back to Beat UM-Crookston 5-4.
Concordia overcame a two-goal deficit in the last 22 minutes of the
game to down UM-Crookston 5-4. Trailing 4-2 with two minutes left
in the second period, the Cobbers received goals from Toby Schneider (Jr.,
Grand Forks, ND), Jon Tranby (Sr., Moorhead, MN) and Brad Kennedy (So,
Mistatim, SASK) to post their twelfth win of the season. Concordia started
the game with a bang by scoring two goals in the first :35 seconds. Mike
Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season
at the 28 second mark, and then seven seconds later Brady Burgess (Jr.,
Moorhead, MN) gave the Cobbers a quick two-goal lead. The two goals
in 35 seconds is a school record for the fastest two goals to start
a game. Crookston rallied in the next five minutes and finally got on the
board when Cory Robinson scored on a shot from past the blueline. The Golden
Eagles proceeded to gain momentum and reeled off the next three goals.
Concordia finally scored two timely third period goals to take the win.
It is the first time all season that the Cobbers have won when trailing
after two periods. Jason Stephen (Jr., Fauquier, BC) and Jim Richards (So.,
Moorhead, MN) split the goaltending duties for Concordia. Stephen entered
midway throught the second period and stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced
to pick up his first college victory. Jeff Horner went all the way in the
net for Crookston and made 34 saves in the game. The win improves the Cobbers
record to 12-8-2 on the year, while Crookston falls to 15-6-1.
The History: Concordia Leads the Series
9-8-1.
The Cobbers have dominated the match up in the last few years. Since
the 1997-98 season the Cobbers have posted a 6-1 record. The Golden Eagles
owned the series from 1994 through 1996, when they won six consecutive
times. Concordia has won both games this season a 6-3 victory on January
24th, and a 5-4 win last Wednesday. The first game between these two teams
was played in 1948 when Crookston won 10-5. The roster for the Cobbers
that year included: Player-Coach Bob Bain, Alden Hvidston, Chuck Feste,
Willis Swanson, Al Billingham, Mitchell, Hopkins, Oie and Sigurgeirson.
The modern series started in 1973 when the Cobbers won 7-2. In that year
the Cobbers were led by a pair of players named Broten and Verchota. Unfortunately
their first names were not Neil and Phil. The Cobber version was Mike Broten,
who had a team-high 13 goals and 21 assists, and Rob Verchota
