Cobbers Cough Up 6 Unearned Runs in Game 2, Split With Macalester

Concordia had a reversal of fortune in a two-hour span, and split a
key MIAC doubleheader with Macalester - winning 5-2 in the first and losing
9-1 in the second.
The Cobbers used the strength of two, two-run home runs to power by the Scots in the first game. Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn.) hit his fourth home run in the first inning and Jesse Barnacle (So., Deer River, Minn.) hit his first collegiate round tripper in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Travis Anderson (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) pitched five strong innings, limiting the dangerous Scot offense to two runs on three hits, and picked up his fourth win of the season. Both Macalester runs were scored on solo home runs. Joel Brettingen hit a leadoff shot in the fourth, and Damon Dahlmeier chased Anderson out of the game with a leadoff home run in the sixth. Derek Dormanen (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) pitched the final two innings for the Cobbers to pick up his second save of the year.
For the game Concordia had eight hits and one error, while the Scots were held to four hits and committed one error.
In the second game, Concordia was only able to scratch out five hits and were held scoreless for the first six innings. The pivotal point of the game came defensively, as the Cobbers committed eight errors and allowed six unearned runs. Macalester (5-5, 16-9) broke the game open in the third inning when they scored four runs on four Concordia (4-4, 12-10) miscues. They tacked on two more in the fourth and finished the scoring with three more unearned runs in the sixth.
Macalester ace Steve Derrington, who was named the MIAC Pitcher of the Week, pitched a complete game to pick up his team-leading fourth win of the year. Isaac Triebold (Jr., Oriska, N.Dak.) started the game for Concordia and gave up six runs in 3.2 innings of work. Jeremy Hinderks (So., Renville, Minn.) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to Justin Berg (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) who pitched the final two innings. Hinderks also singled home the only run of the game for Concordia and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Brettingen continued to swing the hot bat for the Scots, as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI's.
Concordia will get right back on the diamond, hosting crosstown powerhouse NDSU tomorrow at 3:30pm in a 9-inning, single game. Macalester's next series will be at defending NCAA Division III National Champion St. Thomas on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00pm.
