Cobbers Take Two to Complete
a Royal Flush.
Concordia started slow, recovered from a rain delay and finished strong
in sweeping Bethel 12-9 and 7-0.
The Cobbers let the Royals score twice in the first inning of the first game, and had to wait for a 20-minute rain delay before scoring eight runs in the fourth inning to overcome an 8-4 deficit. After Bethel put up two in the opening frame Concordia struck back in the bottom half of the inning on Erin Gunderson's (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) three-run home run. It was Gunderson's second home run in her last three at-bats, as she homered in the fourth inning of the Cobbers' game against MSU-Moorhead on Thursday.
The teams then had to wait through a rain delay before resuming play in the second inning. The Royals scored four times in the second and then twice in the third to take a four-run lead. The game turned in the bottom of the fourth when Concordia sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs. The big blow for the Royals was an error by shortstop Jill Thorvig that allowed the Cobbers to score four extra runs in the inning. Concordia had eight hits in the decisive at-bat.
Gretta Stritesky (Fr., Ogilvie, Minn.), behind the strength of the 12-run output pitched a complete game and picked up her fourth win of the season. First year shortstop Mandy Pearson (Fr., Watkins, Minn.) had three doubles in the game.
In the second game Bethel was unable to solve the pitching dominance of Gunderson and was held to zero runs and four hits. It was the second consecutive game that Gunderson has thrown a complete game shutout. She has now pitched 18 straight scoreless innings and improved her overall season record to 6-2. The offensive star in the second game was Jill Pontius (Sr., Eagle Bend, Minn.) who went 3-for-4 and hit her second home run of the year in the sixth inning. Pontius had two hits in the first game and has now hit safely in 13 of the Cobbers' first 14 games. She also has 10 multiple-hit games during that stretch. She extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first inning of the nightcap.
Concordia will turn around and host St. Mary's tomorrow afternoon at
1:00pm. The twinbill will start a critical three- doubleheader home series
with league powers St. Mary's, St. Thomas and St. Ben's. Bethel's next
action is Tuesday, April 16th when they host St. Olaf at 3:00pm.
