Series Recap -
Concordia used a pair of solo home runs to overpower Hamline 2-1 in
game one of their MIAC doubleheader, and scratched out a 4-2 win in the
second game to complete the sweep.
In the first game, neither team could string together much offense,
as the two teams combined for only eight hits in a game that lasted barely
over an hour.
The Cobbers' first year pitcher Gretta Stritesky (Ogilvie, Minn.)
held the league's top-rated offense to just five hits and only one run.
It is the first time this season that the Pipers have not scored at least
two runs in a game.
Hamline broke on top first, with a single run in the fourth inning before the Cobbers tied it in the fifth. Erin Gunderson (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) did the damage, as she hammered a line shot home run over the center field fence that left the field in a hurry.
The teams traded scoreless frames in the sixth inning, and Stritesky shut the door on Hamline in the seventh after giving up a one-out single. That set the stage for senior catcher Jill Pontius (Sr., Eagle Bend, Minn.). Pontius who was tied for the team lead in home runs with Gunderson before the game started, quickly answered Gunderson's homer in the fifth by ending the game on a solo shot of her own with one out in the seventh. It was the first career walk-off home run for Pontius and fourth on the year.
In the second game Gunderson used her arm to control the Pipers. She allowed nine hits but held Hamline to two runs. Both runs were scored in the fifth inning and that proved to be the extent of the Piper offense, as those were the only two Hamline baserunners to get past second base for the game. She picked up her seventh win of the season.
Concordia scored three runs in the second and added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Becky Bouwman (Jr., Glenwood, Minn.) delivered the clutch game-winning hit for Concordia in the second. She was two-for-two in the game with one RBI.
The Cobbers (6-6, 12-10) will travel to Northfield to play St. Olaf,
tomorrow at 4:00pm. Hamline (8-6, 19-7) will resume play on Thursday, April
25th when they take on Bethel at 4:00pm.
