Concordia fell off the pace in day two of the MIAC Track and Field Championships and tumbled to sixth place. The Cobbers finished with 71 points, which was 25 points ahead of seventh place Carleton and 22 points behind fifth place Hamline.
Kirk Nelson (Sr., Hettinger, N.Dak.) was the only event winner for Concordia, as he capped off his MIAC career by winning the 3000 meter steeplechase in the time of 9:44.9. It is the second straight year that a Concordia athlete has won the event. last year Steve Edlund ('01, Cyrus, Minn.) won the race in a time of 9:29.50.
After winning the decathlon last weekend, Joe Schmidgall (Sr.,
Morris, Minn.) finished his career by earning a third place finish in the
long jump and a fifth place result in the high jump. Schmidgall also ran
the anchor leg on the 4x100 meter relay team that finished third. Fellow
senior Brad Ragan (Sr., Bismarck, N.Dak.) continued his streak of
"top five" performances in the throwing events. Ragan finished third in
the hammer throw and fifth in the shot put. The first year performance
of the meet for Concordia was turned in by Chad Moldenhauer (Fr.,
Bismarck, N.D.) who finished fourth in the javelin. Moldenhauer's toss
of 166-4 is his personal best in college and also the top toss by a Concordia
athlete this season.
