Joe Schmidgall (Sr., Morris, Minn.) capped a terrific senior season by finishing seventh in the decathlon at the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Meet held at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. His seventh place finish earns him All-American recognition, the first time he has received the honor in his four-year Cobber career. Schmidgall was in sixth place entering the final day of competition and moved up to fifth place after the pole vault, before falling to sixth after the javelin and finally into seventh after the final event - the 1500 meter run. He finished only 32 points out of sixth place and 107 out of the fifth spot. He started the second day by running the 110 meter hurdles in 15.89 only 5/100 of a second off his best time of the season. He then proceeded to uncork his best discus toss of the year at 101-3 and followed that up with a personal best, 12-7 1/2, in the pole vault. After eight events he was alone in fifth place with a score of 5,279 points. In the ninth event Schmidgall threw the javelin 136-0, another season-best and finished the competition by running the 1500 meters in 4:48.73. The 1500 meter time was 11 seconds slower than his fastest time of the year. It is the second time in three years that Concordia has produced an All-American in the decathlon. Adam Strainer ('00, East Helena, Mont.) accomplished the feat in 2000 when he set a school record of 6,747 points en route to finishing sixth. 5/23 Joe Schmidgall in 6th
Place in Decathlon After Day 1.
After five events Schmidgall has a total of 3,477 points which places him 334 out of first place which is held by Chris Boyles of Messiah College (PA). He is only 73 points out of third place, as four competitors are bunched within that margin. Schmidgall started the event by running the fastest 100 meters in the competition. He then stumbled in the long jump, only leaping 20-4 1/4 - his season best was 22-9 coming into the meet. After coming up short in the shot put at 32-6 1/4 he reached back and came up with a season-best 6-7 1/2 in the high jump. Schmidgall finished the first day's events by running a 51.10 in the 400 meters, also a personal season best. The decathlon will conclude tomorrow with the final five events. The highest finish for a Cobber athlete in the decathlon at nationals is a sixth place finish by Adam Strainer in 2000. The Cobbers lost to St. John's but beat out Gustavus, Carleton and Macalester. Concordia used the strength of two relay teams and a pair of high jumpers to hold off the Gusties for second place. Both the 4x200 and the 4x400 relay teams finished second and seniors Paul Poduska (Sr., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Joe Schmidgall (Sr., Morris, Minn.) finished tied for first in the high jump. That was the only event that the Cobbers would capture at the meet. For Poduska, it was the second time in the indoor season that he has won the high jump at a meet. Schmidgall is coming off a serious hamstring injury, that has sidelined him for almost all of the indoor season, and will be looking to score points in the pentathlon and jump events at the MIAC Championship Meet. Brad Ragan (Sr., Bismarck, N.Dak.) continued his strong indoor season by placing second in both the shot put and weight throw events. Ragan has placed in the top five in both events at every meet this season except one.
