Cobbers Live Through Another Nightmare, Lose 3-0.

In a script that would make Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King drool, Concordia continues to stumble through a nightmarish season. Like a horror movie audience that pleads with the onscreen actors to not open the closet door, the Cobbers continue to open the portal and hopefully step through to a victory. Unfortunately Concordia keeps finding the deranged killer at each turn of the schedule. The Cobbers played well throughout their match with Macalester on Wednesday, only to lose for their eighth straight time in league play.
With temperatures hovering around 30 degrees at game time, the Cobbers set off to break the spell of nine straight one-goal losses. The two teams traded chances in the first 30 minutes before the Scots broke through and scored at 31:19. Stefan Doerge headed home a cross from Robb Swick for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. It was the first of two goals that Doerge would score on the afternoon. Concordia would counter with their best chance of the game five minutes later when Cyle Cavett (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak.) broke through the back of the Macalester defense only to be stopped by a diving save from goalie Michael Madigan.
The second half played out much like the first with both teams getting chances in the early stages of the period. The game turned in the last seven minutes when the Cobbers through caution to the bitter October wind and pushed extra players into the attack. Macalester caught the Cobbers shorthanded in the back of the defense and scored two extra goals in the final six and a half minutes of the game.
Concordia goalie Kris Overby (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) had eight saves in the game, as compared to seven by Macalester goalie Madigan. Macalester out shot the Cobbers 18-10 for the game in picking up their league-leading seventh conference win of the season.
The Cobbers will hope to slay the ever-growing monster when they return
to action on Saturday, November 2nd at St. Thomas at 1:00pm. With the win,
the Scots set up a first place showdown with second place Gustavus on Friday
night, November 1st at 7:30pm at Macalester.
