Series Recap -
(MOORHEAD)--- Concordia shut out red-hot St. John's for 14 straight
innings and came away with a crucial sweep in their opening series of the
MIAC season. The Cobbers made the most of their six hits in the opening
game to win 7-0, and in the nightcap they broke the game open in the bottom
of the fifth with one run and then tacked on two more in the sixth to come
away with a 3-0 victory.
The back-to-back league shutouts for Concordia is the first since the 1993 season when they beat Carleton 8-0 and 1-0. The Cobbers have now stretched their scoreless streak to three games and 23 consecutive innings after having beaten Valley City State 5-0 on March 26. That string ties the school record for most consecutive shutouts. Concordia has achieved that mark three other times under head coach Bucky Burgau. In 1995 the Cobbers shutout Mt. St. Claire and then Clarks College twice. In 1991 they defeated Carleton 10-0 and then swept Augsburg 4-0 and 5-0. The final 3-game string came in 1982 when they beat St. Mary's 3-0 and then swept Macalester 6-0 and 2-0.
The Cobbers received stellar pitching performances from starters Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./Renville County West HS) and Isaac Triebold (Sr., Oriska, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) and a dominating bullpen appearance in the second game from Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) to completely shut down the high-powered Johnnie offensive attack. St. John's entered the series ranked fifth in the Midwest Region in the latest American Coaches Baseball Association (ABCA) poll and were on a seven-game winning streak. In those seven games, the team was averaging 8.28 runs per game.
The key to Concordia's success in the first game came in the first two innings. After retiring the Johnnies in the top half of the first inning, Concordia was able to scratch a single run in the bottom of the inning when St. John's starter Blake Cheeley hit a batter, walked a second and then hit a third to drive in the lone run of the inning. In the top of the second inning, Hinderks, making his fifth start of the season, worked out of a bases loaded jam with only one out to keep his scoreless inning streak intact. After Scott LaVoy singled to load the bases, Hinderks struck out Chris Bell and Charlie Carr to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning Concordia scored four runs on one hit, as the Cobbers were the beneficiary of Cheeley's continued control problems and a key error by shortstop John Hoffer.
Concordia added two more runs in the sixth inning when Luther Kangas' (Jr., Vadnais Heights, White Bear lake HS) double to center field drove in the sixth and seventh runs of the game.
Hinderks closed the game in the seventh by striking out Carr. It was his Hinderks' seventh strike out of the game. In the seven innings he allowed only four hits and after the jam in the second inning didn't allow a Johnnie runner to advance past second base. With the win, Hinderks improves to 4-1 on the year and lowers his ERA to 2.25.
In the series finale, Concordia scratched a run in the fifth inning and a pair of runs in the sixth to break open a scoreless tie. The critical moment in the game occurred in the top of the fifth inning when Cobber starter Isaac Triebold loaded the bases with two outs. Triebold was relieved by hard-throwing closer Derek Dormanen, and Dormanen was able to get Johnnie power-hitter Jed Riegelman to strike out to end the inning.
The offensive hero for Concordia in game two was junior secondbaseman Jesse Barnacle. Barnacle went 2-for-3 and drove in two of the team's three runs. The biggest hit was his single in the bottom of the fifth that broke open the 0-0 game and gave Dormanen a lead which he would never relinquish. After Aaron Aslakson (Jr., Benson, Minn./Benson HS) doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Chad Worthington (Bozeman, Mont./Belgrade HS). Barnacle produced the game-winning RBI on a single to center field that plated Worthington.
Dormanen pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed only one hit, and of the eight batters he faced he struck out four. For the season, he has fanned 21 batters in only 11.2 innings of work. Triebold gave Cobber coach Bucky Burgau a quality start, as he pitched 4.2 innings - gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three.
Concordia will play at St. Olaf on Tuesday, April 8 at 1:00pm. They
will then return home to host St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 9 at 2:30pm.
