Cobbers Lose to NDSU 11-0 in the Calm Before the Storm.

(MOORHEAD)-- Playing the prelude game to the four most important games of the 2003 season, Concordia dropped a non-conference game to NCAA Division II North Dakota State 11-0. It is the fifth straight loss that Concordia has suffered at the hands of the Bison. Despite the loss, Concordia maintains an impressive record against the scholarshiped Bison. The Cobbers now trail in the series 30-38 with one game ending in a tie.
Concordia, who will play St. Mary's on Tuesday, April 29 and St. Thomas on Saturday, May 3 in playoff-type baseball, threw three pitchers that had totaled a combined 29.2 innings pitched on the year. Jake Hendricks (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) , who pitched the first 5.1 innings and gave up seven runs, was saddled with his second loss of the year. Brian Schumacher (Fr., Thompson, N.Dak./Thompson HS) replaced Hendricks and gave up four runs and five hits in 2.1 innings of work. The most effective Cobber pitcher was Blake Trenbeath (Fr., Cavalier, N.Dak./Cavalier HS), who was seeing his first varsity action of the year. Trenbeath pitched the final 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit.
The Bison broke the nine-inning game open in the middle innings. NDSU (25-17-0) scored seven times in the 4th-6th innings and tacked on three more in the eighth inning to pull away with the victory. The Cobbers could never touch NDSU starter Neil Wagner, who pitched the first five innings and only allowed two hits. The relief trio of Josh Lambert, Tom Branca and Tom Fuchs picked up where Wagner left off, stifling the Cobber bats in the final four innings and only allowing a pair of hits as well.
Offensively, NDSU manufactured 10 hits with 8 different players getting at least one hit. Joe Cicora and Sam Rothstein were the only Bison with multiple hits. Cicora went 2-for-3 in the game, scored three runs and drove in a run. Rothstein entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and went 2-for-2 with a walk in his three plate appearances.
Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) went 1-for-3 for Concordia and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West HS) was the only Cobber to have more than one hit in the game. Hebrink was 2-for-4 and bumped his season average to .321.
Concordia will host St. Mary's on Tuesday, April
29 at 1:30pm. The Cobbers need only one victory in their last four games
to clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs. Concordia will finish the regular
season on Saturday, May 3 when they host league-leading St. Thomas at 1:00pm.
