Series Recap -
(MOORHEAD)--
Concordia fell one game short in their quest for the program's fifth
MIAC title. The Cobbers won the first game of their doubleheader with league
champion St. Thomas 9-3 but lost in the nightcap 7-0.
The win gives the Tommies the outright MIAC regular season title, their fifth in the last eight years. With the loss, Concordia falls to third place due to St. Olaf's two-game sweep over Carleton earlier in the day. The Cobbers will face the Ole's in the first round of the MIAC double-elimination tournament while St. Thomas will face fourth place St. John's.
The Cobbers won the first game of the series with timely hitting and several St. Thomas miscues in the field. The Cobbers scattered 14 hits in the game and the Tommies committed six errors to help Concordia score nine runs in the game. The nine total runs is the most runs that the Tommies have given up all season long.
Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn./Renville County West HS) pitched the first four innings to earn his school-record ninth win of the season. Derek Dormanen (Sr., Menahga, Minn./Menahga HS) finished the game for Concordia and didn't allow a hit in picking up his ninth save of the year. That total breaks the old school record of eight saves in a single season set back in 1996 by Stuart Lang.
The top hitters in Concordia's lineup all had at least two hits. Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn./Renville County West HS) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's to tie the school's single-season RBI record.
In the second game, St. Thomas was able to scratch across runs in the
second, third, fourth and fifth innings. The Tommies used their running
game to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead after the third inning. In the second
inning they scored a lone run on a walk, sacrifice bunt, a steal of third
and then a ground ball to second.
In the third inning, St. Thomas scored two runs on three hits that
barely reached the outfield, a bunt and two stolen bases.
Dormanen reliever Concordia starter Isaac Triebold (Sr., Oriska, N. Dak./Fargo South HS) in the third inning and gave up five of the seven runs. Bryan Romsa (So., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS) and Matt McLeod (So., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS) combined to pitch two scoreless innings at the end of the game.
Dormanen had one of only two Cobber hits in the finale and went 3-for-6 for the series. He extended his hitting streak to 17 games and raised his team-leading batting average to .360. Ben Kvidt (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) had the other Concordia base hit in the second game as the Cobbers loaded the bases in the seventh inning with one out but weren't able to get a run on the board.
Concordia will play St. Olaf in the first round of the MIAC tournament on Friday, May 9 at St. Olaf at 3:30pm. Depending on the outcome of the game they will either play at St. Olaf again or at Dundas Park in Northfield. Either way, the game time for the second round game will be at 7:00pm.
