(Sioux City, Iowa)---Concordia was outscored 7-4 in the last 42 seconds and lost to Briar Cliff (IA) 74-71. The two teams were tied at 67-67 with just under one minute to go in the game when the Chargers went on the game-deciding run. Josh Downey scored a career-high 20 points to lead Concordia. Koty Cowgill had 23 points for Briar Cliff to lead all scorers.
The Cobbers jumped to an early 10-4 lead before Briar Cliff (2-2) 12-4 run of their own to knot the game at 16-16. The first half featured six different lead changes and saw Concordia (1-2) build their biggest lead of the game at 33-25 with 5:16 to go in the half. Briar Cliff would slowly whittle the lead to two points at halftime, trailing only 38-36. The Cobbers shot 55% (16-for-29) in the first half.
In the second half, Briar Cliff held the hot hand as they shot 58% (14-for-24) from the field and built a six-point lead mid way through the period. The Cobbers rallied behind the 3-point shooting of Downey and gained a five-point advantage at 61-56 with 7:31 to play.
From that point on, the Cobbers would be plagued by four missed layups and three costly turnovers. For the final seven minutes of the game, the Chargers outscored Concordia 18-10 to come away with the three-point victory.
For the game, Concordia shot 50% (27-for-54) from the field and an impressive 85.7% (12-for-14) from the free throw line. Briar Cliff shot 52.8% (28-for-53) from the field and a game-swinging 53.3% (8-for-15) from 3-point range.
Concordia will play at St. Olaf on Saturday, November 30th at 3:00pm.
