Cobbers Let 15-Point 2nd Half Lead Slip Away; Fall 71-68.

Jared Swanson Sr. Morris, Minn. Had game-highs in points (26) and rebounds (9) in Concordia's 71-68 loss at Macalester.

(St. Paul, Minn.)-- It was a tale of two halves for Concordia when they played at Macalester on Wednesday night. In the first half, the Cobbers stymied the potent Scot offense and held a 37-24 halftime lead. In the second half, Concordia watched as Macalester rallied from 15 points down to come back and win 71-68. In the first half, Concordia held Macalester to 28.6% (8-for-28) from the field, in the second half the Scots shot 64% (16-for-25) from the field and a scorching 85.7% (6-for-7) from behind the 3-point line.

The Cobbers staked themselves to a 13-point lead at the break by running their half court offense with economic proficiency. Jared Swanson (Sr., Morris, Minn.) continually was free from inside and scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the opening period. During the first eight minutes the Cobbers built a 19-5 lead and threatened to run away and hide. Macalester cut the lead to 21-16 with 8:03 left in the half, before the Cobbers went on a 16-8 run to finish out the remainder of the period.

In the second half, Concordia went ahead 39-24 on a made basket by Nate Ohme (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.). From that point on, it was all Macalester. The Scots outscored the Cobbers 25-9 over the next ten minutes and took the lead at 49-48. The teams then traded baskets, and the lead, for the next minute. Macalester went on a mini-run of 11-3 to push the advantage to 62-53 with 5:03 left in the game. Concordia answered with a 7-2 run of there own to tighten the game at 62-60 with 3:48 to play. A made free throw by Macalester all-conference player Ben Van Thorre made the score 63-60, and then Concordia's DeShawn Curtis (Sr., Hephzibah, GA) scored a basket to cut the lead to one, at 63-62.

The scoring ground to a halt over the next three minutes as the teams fought for control of the game. A pair of baskets by each team bumped the score to 67-66 with 19 seconds to play.

The Cobbers quickly fouled on an inbounds pass and Patrick Russell proceeded to sink both free throws to give Macalester a three-point lead at 69-66 with 17 seconds left. Soren Nelson (So., Twin Valley, Minn.) got free for a basket with nine seconds to go to cut the lead to one, and then Russell sealed the game at the free throw line by converting on both attempts after Concordia's Kevin Gilchrest (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) fouled him with eight seconds to play.

Besides his 26 points, Swanson also had a game-high nine rebounds. Chris Thomas (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.Dak.) was the only other Cobber in double figures, as he added 11 points. Van Thorre led Macalester with 15 points and Russell had 14. Will Moeller, on a 4-for-7 shooting night from behind the arc, finished with 13 points.
