Steady
Cobbers Use Solid Defense and Timely Hits to Sweep St. Kate's.
Series Recap:
(Moorhead, Minn.)-- The Cobber defense
played 14 innings of errorless fastpitch and helped Concordia to a 5-1,
6-2 sweep over visiting St. Kate's. It is the first time this season that
Concordia has played two consecutive games without committing an error.
With the two victories, Concordia has now won three straight and five of their last six. The improved their conference record to 5-7 and overall they are now 9-15. The Wildcats fall for the sixth straight time, and see their conference record dwindle to 1-11 and their overall mark drop to 5-18.
Concordia started the series on a solid note by not allowing a run in the first inning of game one. Entering the series, the Cobbers had been outscored 23-7 in the first inning. The Cobber hitters needed two innings before finally getting their timing down on Wildcat starter Ashley Decker. Sophomore outfielder Krystle Abrahamson (Olivia, Minn./BOLD HS) started the hit parade for Concordia in the third inning. She led off with an infield single and later scored on a Kelli Niess (Fr., Rice, Minn. Sauk Rapids HS) base hit. The Cobbers scored three runs on three hits in the inning and erased a 1-0 deficit that St. Kate's had put up in the top half of the inning.
Cobber starter Lindy Sparby (So., Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) settled down after allowing eight base runners in the first three innings. She only allowed one more Wildcat hitter to reach base before she left the mound in the top of the sixth inning. Steph Boesche (So., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) came on and pitched two scoreless innings, conceding a single hit in the top of the seventh.
Abrahamson finished the game by going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Leadoff hitter Kelli Niess was the only other Cobber with multiple hits in the game. Niess went 3-for-3, scored two runs and collected two RBI's.
In the nightcap, the Cobbers used a three-run fifth inning to break the game open and set themselves up for the sweep. Gretta Stritesky (Jr., Ogilvie, Minn.) got the start on the mound for Concordia and only allowed a pair of runs in the fourth inning. She left the game after the fifth inning, allowing only four hits and striking out three. Boesche came on in relief and picked up her first save of the season. She pitched the final two innings, and retired the final six St. Kate's batters in order.
Offensively, Abrahamson continued to shine. She went 2-for-3 for the second straight game and drove in two more runs while reaching base on a pair of doubles. She is now hitting .421 at home as compared to .105 on the road. Two other Concordia players amassed more than one hit in the Cobber nine-hit attack. Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) went 2-for-3, scored a run and had a lone RBI, while Sparby was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Concordia will continue their three-series
homestand when they play Macalester on Saturday, April 17 at 1:00pm. The
Cobbers will then turn around and host Bethel on Monday, April 19 at 4:00pm.
