Power Bowl Preview
Power Bowl VI
Today’s game marks the sixth
in the Power Bowl series. Concordia has a 2-3 record in the previous five
Power Bowls. The Power Bowl started in 1999, with the Dragons winning the
initial contest 44-7. They came back and took the second Power Bowl, 21-20.
Since then, the teams have traded victories. Concordia has never won two
straight Power Bowl games. Cobber head coach Terry Horan is 2-1 in the
Power Bowl.
About Last Year
The Cobbers charged strong
from the gates and carried the momentum through to the end of the game,
finishing with an impressive 42-28 win over MSU-Moorhead in the fifth annual
Power Bowl. The victory avenged the Dragons' 41-17 win in the 2002 Power
Bowl.
The Cobber's rushing attack
led the way, with three players gaining over 75 yards: Bobby Clark with
118 yards on 17 carries, Jeremy Hinderks with 94 yards and 2 touchdowns
on 16 carries, and Ryan Hebrink with 78 yards on 17 carries. Hebrink was
also 8-14 passing for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Andrew Passanante
caught seven passes including three TD’s.
For the Dragons, Jon Frykman
led the way, rushing for 46 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He
also was 10-19 passing for 174 yards and one touchdown. Chad Davison was
the receiving star, catching 7 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Series Background
Concordia leads the overall
series between the two teams 46-23-12.
The Cobbers are 4-6 in their
last 10 meetings and 8-12 in the last 20 games with the Dragons…The series
started in 1920 with MSU-M, then known as Moorhead Normal, winning the
inaugural meeting 21-0…The two teams tied in three of the first six meetings…The
Cobbers had an unbeaten streak of 18 games in the series from 1975…There
was a span from 1939 until 1978 when the Cobbers held a 32-2-3 advantage
over the Dragons. MSU-Moorhead’s longest winning streak in the series is
three games. That happened on two occasions – from 1935-37 and then again
from 1985-87…In Terry Horan’s playing days from 1986-89, Concordia was
2-2…The largest margin of victory in the series is 49 points. Concordia
beat the Dragons 49-0 in 1964. That was also the year that the Cobbers
went on to win the NAIA national championship…he most points scored by
a team is 54 when Concordia beat MSU-M 54-16 in 1959.
89th Season of Cobber
Football
The 2004 season marks Concordia’s
89th year of intercollegiate football, and the Cobbers hold an all-time
record of 433-246-39 …Football was started at Concordia in 1916 by Mr.
A. M. Sattre. The first game for the Cobbers was against Valley City Normal.
Valley City won that game 12-0…Concordia has won three national championships
and won the MIAC on 17 different occasions.
