Game Story
The Cobbers charged strong from the gates and carried the momentum through to the end of the game, finishing with an impressive 42-28 win over rival MSU-Moorhead in the fifth annual Power Bowl. The victory avenges the Dragons' 41-17 win in last year's Power Bowl, and hopefully sets the tone for another positive season. Concordia scored the first 28 points of the game to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Ryan Hebrink connected on an 8-yard pass to Andrew Passanante midway through the first quarter to open the scoring, then Hebrink struck again early in the second on a 2-yard scoring run. Jeremy Hinderks joined the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run with 6:28 to go in the half, then Hebrink and Passanante hooked up again, this time on an impressive 44-yard strike with just 31 seconds remaining in the half to give the Cobbers a 28-0 lead. The Dragons didn't go away, though, and put their first points on the board early in the third quarter on a 68-yard pass from Jon Frykman to Chad Davison. The Cobbers struck back, though, on Passanante's third touchdown reception of the game, a 13-yard pass from Hebrink with 8:30 left in the third. Then the Dragons scored two straight touchdowns, both on runs by Frykman, to cut the lead to 35-21 after three quarters. Concordia extended the lead to 42-21 early in the fourth quarter, however, on Hinderks' second score of the game, a 5-yard plunge. The Dragons added a late touchdown on a 9-yard dash by Ryan Larson to reach the final of 42-28. The Cobber's rushing attack led the way, with three players gaining over 75 yards: Bobby Clark with 118 yards on 17 carries, Jeremy Hinderks with 94 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries, and Ryan Hebrink with 78 yards on 17 carries. Hebrink was also 8-14 passing for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Andrew Passanante was his favorite target, catching 7 of the 8 completions and all three of the scores. For the Dragons, Jon Frykman led the way, rushing for 46 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He also was 10-19 passing for 174 yards and one touchdown. Chad Davison was the receiving star, catching 7 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. Next up for the Cobbers is a road game against Gustavus, next Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1:00.
