Cobbers vs. Vikings Match Recap

Sixty-Minute Women; Cobbers Dispose of Valley City in Three Straight. 
MOORHEAD-- A prime-time drama show, the longest running TV show on Sunday nights and one hour martinizing. Those are all things that are supposed to take 60 minutes. A volleyball match is not supposed to be on the list of things to do in one hour, but that was exactly the time period it took Concordia to dispose of Valley City State in the second round of the Concordia Invitational. 

The Cobbers gave the Vikings an early 2-1 lead in the first game but then rattled off 12 of the next fourteen points in the game and never looked back. 

Concordia has now won seven straight matches and ups their overall record to 7-1-0. The Cobbers have not lost since their opening match of the season and are currently ranked 21st in NCAA Division III. Valley City is winless on the season, falling to 0-8 on the year. 

For the fourth straight match, Rebecca Shane (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) led the team in kills. She knocked down 10 winners, but the highlight of the night for Shane was when she served three consecutive aces to end the match in the third game. 

A pair of role players had solid games for the Cobbers. Sophomore Lindsay Sipma (Dickinson, N.D./Dickinson HS) and freshman Michelle Honek (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) each had season-highs in kills. For Honek it was her best night as a Cobber. She had six kills and is slowly losing her nervousness about playing in the faster paced collegiate game. Sipma collected seven kills, one off her career-best.

Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn./Hawley HS) had a match-high 32 assists, and Amy Fitzner (Sr., Valley City, N.D./Valley City HS) played another stellar defensive game, picking up a match-high 13 digs. She has now posted double-digit dig totals in all but one of Concordia's eight matches this season.

Concordia will finish the tournament by facing their toughest competition on Saturday. The Cobbers will square off against Jamestown, the only other undefeated team in the tournament, at 11:00am and then play Si Tanka University, last year's Concordia Invitational champions, at 3:00pm. Both matches will be played in Memorial Auditorium.
