vs. Tommies Match Recap
Cobbers Stop Losing Skid
at Two; Beat St. Thomas to Clinch MIAC Playoff Berth!
ST. PAUL-- Concordia remedied
their two-match hiccup by beating St. Thomas 3-2 (28-30, 30-25, 30-27,
23-30, 15-7) and in the process clinched an MIAC playoff berth.
The Cobbers stopped their
losing skid at two and improved their MIAC record to 8-2-0. Concordia is
now 20-3 overall, marking the third straight season they have reached the
20-win plateau. That has only been accomplished one other time in the history
of the program. Former head coach Kathy James led the Cobbers to
three straight 20-win seasons from 1988-90.
St. Thomas misses a chance
to move ahead of Concordia in the standings. The Tommies fall to 7-3-0
in conference play and 13-11 overall. By virtue of Macalester's loss to
St. Ben's tonight, they also clinch a playoff spot. They are now locked
in a three-way tie for fourth place.
Becca Shane (So.,
Detroit Lakes, Minn.) carried the Cobber offense through the five-game
marathon. Shane tied her career high in kills with 26, and finished with
a team-high .455 attack percentage. She also had five blocks. Jacki
Barten (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) and Amy Fitzner (Sr., Valley City,
N.D.) were second on the team in kills with 14 each. Barten also had five
blocks in the winning effort. Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.)
had 43 assists, which pushes her over the 1,000 assist barrier for the
third straight season. She now has 1,041 assists in 2004 and 4,292 for
her career. Emily Gilbertson (So., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS)
continues to solidify the backline defensively for Tim Mosser's
team. Gilbertson finished with a team-high 13 digs.
The Cobbers will finish the
regular season when they host St. Ben's on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:30pm.
The match will be senior night, as Concordia will honor the six seniors
that have been instrumental in returning the program back to the top of
the MIAC.
The winner of that match
will secure the #2 seed in the conference playoffs and host one of the
semifinal playoff matches. There is still an outside chance that Concordia
could claim their first MIAC regular season title in program history. If
the Cobbers defeat St. Ben's and Carleton loses to St. Olaf, then both
Concordia and Carleton would be declared co-champions. However, by virtue
of their 3-2 win over the Cobbers last Friday, the Knights have already
clinched the #1 seed in the tournament.
