MIAC FINALS: at Carleton College November 6 - 7:00 pm
Cobbers Bombard Carleton to Claim Second Straight MIAC Tournament Crown! ![]() If there was any remaining doubt that the Cobbers were not at the top of their game, it was very quickly put to rest, as Concordia demolished regular season champion Carleton 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-19) to claim their second straight MIAC tournament title. With the win, the Cobbers earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs. It will be the second straight season Concordia has participated in the NCAA championships and fourth appearance in program history. For the second straight year, Concordia swept the Knights in the championship match, and for the second straight year the Cobbers did not drop a single game in the MIAC tournament. Concordia has now won four straight matches, three by 3-0 sweeps, after dropping matches to Carleton and Gustavus late in October that cost them a chance to win the conference regular season crown. Five different Cobbers had double-digit kill totals. Jacki Barten (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) had a match-high 15 kills for Concordia. Amy Fitzner (Sr., Valley City, N.D.) had another double-double for the Cobbers. She had 10 kills to go along with 14 digs. Becca Shane (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had just another routine night in the office. She finished with 10 kills and had an attack percentage of .450. Fitzner was named to the MIAC All-Tournament team which is a fitting ending for the senior who was mysteriously left off the MIAC All-Conference squad earlier in the week. The year began with Barten, Fitzner and Shane as the high profile attack weapons for Tim Mosser's squad. They have since added two more players in their arsenal to give the team a dominant front line that can produce kills from any part of the net. Kris Sather (Sr., Fosston, Minn.) has saved her best for last. She has at least ten kills in her last five matches. The biggest addition for Concordia has been the play of freshman Michelle Honek (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS). Honek started the season as a wide-eyed first year player but has grown into a fearsome outside hitter. Like Sather, she has come on in the playoffs for Concordia. She has double-digit kill totals in two of the last three matches. Sather had 11 kills, nine digs, three service aces and had an attack percentage of .297 in the title match. Honek finished with 10 kills and only one attack error. She had a match-high .474 attack percentage. Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) continued to slice apart the opposing team's defense by letting all her kill queens have quality sets. Walden, the league's MVP, finished with a match-high 47 assists. She has 140 assists in the team's last three matches. Not an overwhelming total unless you consider the fact that all three have been three-game sweeps for the Cobbers. Like Fitzner, Walden was named to the MIAC All-Tournament team. Emily Gilbertson (So., Alexandria, Minn.), the team's defensive specialist, recorded a team-high 15 digs. Carleton, which falls to 22-3 on the year, will have to wait and see if they will receive an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. Alivia Bryan led the Knights with 11 kills. Jamie Lykken had a match-high 17 digs. Concordia improves their
overall record to 23-3 and will await the announcement of the NCAA pairings.
The tournament bracket will be released tomorrow night via the NCAA website
