NCAA Midwest Regional 1st Round at UW-La Crosse vs. Lakeland College (Wis.) November 11 - 4:30 pm
La Crosse, Wis.-- Last year the Cobbers were content to be in the NCAA tournament and happy with anything that came their way. This year the Cobbers have higher aspirations and have a business-like attitude. Concordia calmly dispatched Lakeland (Wis.) 3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-23) in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional, and advances to play UW-Stout on Friday, November 12 at 4:30pm in the regional the semifinal. The Cobbers, MIAC tournament champions, quickly jumped on the Muskies, who were the regular-season and tournament champions of the Lake Michigan Conference. Concordia bolted to the early lead in game one, and except for a stumble at the beginning of game two, never looked back. Concordia cruised to a 30-18 win in the opening game, but then gave up seven straight points at the beginning of the second game, struggled to catch up and then finally passed the Muskies at 16-15. The Cobbers went on to claim 14 of the final 21 points and won 30-23. In the third game, the Concordia frontline continued to find open lanes in the Lakeland blocking attempts and was able to stop any offensive attack the Muskies tried to muster. The Cobbers pulled away in the end, winning 30-23 and claiming their fourth straight sweep. Concordia is now 24-3 on the season and has won five straight and 24 of the past 26. Lakeland ends their season with a 25-14 overall mark. Amy Fitzner (Valley City, N.D.) posted her seventh straight double-double. The senior outside hitter finished with a match-high 13 kills and a team-high 18 digs. She did have an attack error in the match and came away with a match-high .406 hitting percentage. Concordia had four players with at least 10 kills. Besides Fitzner, Jacki Barten (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) recorded 12 kills to go along with a match-high five blocks and three service aces. Becca Shane (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had 11 kills, and Kris Sather (Sr., Fosston, Minn.) completed the quartet with 10 kills. Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) had another stellar 3-game match. She had 35 assists and 13 digs as the Muskies continually tried to hit at her to take the MIAC MVP out of the game. Lakeland was led by Heather Heberlein, who had 11 kills. Lana Neuman totaled 28 assists in the losing effort. Concordia will try to better
last season's region semifinal loss finish when they take on UW-Stout
tomorrow at 4:30pm at UW-La Crosse. The 13th-ranked Blue Devils earned
their NCAA bid by winning the WIAC tournament championship.
