Cobbers
vs. Royals Game Recap
Possessed Cobbers Give
Up Alien-Like Goal in Last Minute and Lose 4-3 to Bethel.
MOORHEAD-- For the second
game in a row the final 30 seconds in the game reared its ugly head for
the Cobbers. Like an alien appearing from inside the body of an unsuspecting
human in a science fiction horror film, the Cobbers were terrorized by
a goal in the dying seconds of the game for the second consecutive contest.
On Friday it was a pair of
goals in the final 35 seconds that enable Bethel to gain a tie with the
Cobbers. On Saturday, the Royals scored a goal at the 19:30 mark and came
away with a 4-3 victory.
The game started slowly for
Concordia as they tried to shake off the effects of the bizarre ending
on Friday night. After giving up two goals midway through the opening period,
Concordia climbed their way back into the game by scoring a goal with less
than four minutes to play in the first frame and then tacked on the equalizer
less than a minute into the second period.
Paige Stone's wraparound
goal on the power play gave Concordia new life in the first period after
they started the game by allowing a power play goal and an even-strength
tally less than two minutes apart. For Stone it was her fifth goal of the
year - her best offensive output in her two-year career.
Brandie Dunn tied
the game at 2-2 to start the second period and it appeared that Concordia
would take control of the game. Bethel's Mary Barton quieted
that theory when she scored the third goal of the game for the Royals at
the 12:25 mark. Hannah Impola then brought Concordia level for the
second time when she scored at 16:57. For Impola, it was her second point
of the game as she picked up an assist on Dunn's goal earlier in the period.
The two teams played a scoreless
third period until the final minute of the game. Heidi Govednik
scored the game-winner for Bethel. It was her seventh goal of the season.
Bethel outshot Concordia
44-35 for the game. The Cobbers were 2-for-3 on the power play, and the
Royals scored once in their four man-advantage situations.
Jenna Johnson stopped
40 shots and was saddled with her 10th loss of the year. Kelly Moriarty
made 32 saves for Bethel to pick up her second win of the season.
Concordia is now 3-10-1 in
the MIAC and 4-15-1 overall. Bethel improves to 3-9-2 in the league and
3-12-2 overall.
The Cobbers will host St.
Olaf in their final home series of the regular season next weekend. Game
times for the two-game series are 7:00pm on Friday, February 18 and 2:00pm
on Saturday, February 19. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Sports
Center.
