throws with :01 second remaining. Gustavus improves to 23-3 on the

the first 12 minutes of the game until a quick 9-4 spurt by the Gusties
gave them a 30-23 lead with 4:01 remaining in the half. A jumper
by junior guard Bob Southworth with :02 seconds remaining gave Gustavus
a 38-32 lead at the intermission. Both teams shot extremely well
in the first 20 minutes with the Gusties making
60% of their shots (15-25) and the Tommies converting 52% of their
attempts (13-25). Top scorers in the first half included Bob Southworth
with 14 for Gustavus and Tom Fritz with 11 for St. Thomas.

Gustavus Men's Basketball Team Defeats Nebraska Wesleyan, 65-51
To Advance To "Sweet Sixteen" of NCAA National Tournament
Tim Kennedy, Gustavus SID
(Lincoln, Nebraska, Saturday, March 7, 1998) -- The Gustavus Adolphus
College men's basketball team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 65-51 in
the
second round of the NCAA National Tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The
Gusties will now face defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan
in the
West - Midwest Sectional Finals next weekend at a site yet to be
determined.
Against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Gusties held
a slim 45-44 lead with
5:25 remaining, but used a 20-6 run over the final five minutes of
the game
to claim the 11-point victory. The Gusties, who are the #3 seed
in the
West Region, improve to 25-3, while Nebraska Wesleyan, the #2 seed,
finishes at 23-3.
Both teams struggled from the field in the
game as the Gusties shot
44% (20-of-45) and the Plainsmen shot 40% (18-of-44). Gustavus
did convert
six-of-13 three-point attempts, while Nebraska Wesleyan managed to
make
only two-of-17 treys. Luke Schmidt led the Gusties with 15 points
followed
by Mark McDonnell with 14 and Bob Southworth with 13. Eleven
of
Southworth's 13 points were scored in the second half. Mark McDonnell
was
eight-of-eight from the free throw line, including six-of-six in the
final
three minutes of the game. Nate Thomas led Nebraska Wesleyan
with 17
points. Gustavus avenged a 61-59 loss to the Plainsmen in the
second round
of the national tournament last year in Lincoln.
Gustavus has now advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen"
of the NCAA Division
III Tournament three times in the past six years (1992, 1995, and 1998).
The last appearance was in 1995 when they were defeated by Wittenberg
University in Springfield, Ohio, 76-68. The NCAA Tournament Committee
will
now choose either UW-Platteville, who defeated UW-Oshkosh, 69-59, in
the
other West Region second round game tonight, or Gustavus to host the
West-Midwest Sectional on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14. The
decision
is expected to be made on Sunday evening, March 8 at 7:00 pm.
UW-Platteville, which is 26-0 and seeded #1 in the West Region and
ranked
#1 in Division III, is considered the favorite to host due to their
being
the highest remaining seed in the West Region.
