MIAC Men's Basketball Tournament History

The four-team MIAC Tournament was initiated in 1984 for the 1984-85 season. Since that time it has become one of the most entertaining and intense Division III post-season tournaments in the country. Every year there is a fierce battle during the regular season to see not only who can win the MIAC title, but also who can finish among the top four in the league and qualify for the tournament. The tournament winner gets the league's automatic NCAA bid. In the 2000-01 season, the format for the tournament was changed to include six teams.

St. John's won the inaugural MIAC playoff tournament in 1985 and since then only four other teams have claimed MIAC tournament titles. Those teams include Gustavus (8), St. John's (5), St. Thomas (5), Bethel (1) and Concordia (1). St. Thomas became the first MIAC team to advance to the NCAA Final Four in 1994. Gustavus became the second team from the MIAC to advance to the NCAA Final Four when they made it all the way to the national championship game in 2002-03.
