Season Outlook and Notes:
After two seasons of .500 football there will be a leadership
transition in the Hamline Football Program. The Pipers return 65 players,
including All-MIAC Kris Staples and All-MIAC PK Steve Koehnqr), among 31
lettermen and 11 starters. The strength of the program is a group of 32
players in the junior class. Nineteen men in that class were lettermen
and seven were starters in 1997. An area of strength in the class of 2000
is the offensive line with lettermen Dave Brown (6-3, 240), Donnie
DeFrance (5-11, 238), Seth Lieffort (6-2, 227), Adam McDonald (6-0, 221),
and Guy Smith (6-2, 219) leading the way. The Piper Offense will have to
earn respect. With QB a wide open battle and talented tailback Corey Hanson
(Sr, Co-Capt, 6-0, 210) battling nagging injuries, there are many
questsons to answer. TE Mike Yankee, 6-3, 209) had 17 catches and adds
another experienced performer on the front wall. Newcomers with speed
may get varsity playing time. On defense, the Pipers are hard-nosed. They
led the MIAC in defending the tush in 1997. Nine Lettermen return
on a front wall that is led by Staples and tackle Dan Ogiba (Sr, 6-0, 258).
The most talented and physical player will be strong safety Dan Benning(Sr,
2nd Team All-MIAC Capt.) At 6-2, 218, Benning runs and collides with ball
handlers as well as anyone in DIII football. Three regular secondary
players graduated but lettermen Jabari Thompson~r, 5-11, 183) who also
plays basketball, special teams leader Tobin Hempel(Sr, 5-10, 176)
and Ben Kvaname~r, 5- 11, 175) a track sprinter, lead a pack of quality
replacements. Steve Koehn returns to handle the place kicking ('ongest
FG, 46 yds) and the ptnting. The kicking game will be critical for the
Pipers as their offense matures.
Hamline has a critical mass of quality football players in its program.
The question that remaans is who will step up to make the "Big Play" and
how soon. With Coach Dick Tressel entering his 21st season
(118-78-2), performers best step up quickly or his heart may not be able
to handle the anxiety.
