Concordia wins MIAC women's
golf title for seventh time in eight years
HUTCHINSON, Minn. -- Sophomore Jenni Kovash (So., Moorhead, Minn.) earned medalist honors with a second-day, one-over-par 75, helping to lead her Concordia College-Moorhead Cobbers to the team championship at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's golf championships, completed Sunday at the Oakdale Country Club in rural Hutchinson.
Kovash's two-day, 36-hole total of 152 (77-75) was five shots better than runner-up Heather Schmitt (Jr., Paynesville, Minn.) of the College of St. Benedict, who shot a 157 (78-79). Kovash's score was also a tournament record. The previous low score for an MIAC medalist was 160, shot by Concordia's Christie Strecker in 1996.
Concordia won the MIAC title for the fourth year in a row and seventh time in the eight years the MIAC has sponsored a women's golf championship. Concordia has won titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1997, with only St. Thomas breaking the Cobber title string in 1994.
Concordia finished with a two-day total of 648 (330-318), while St. Benedict had a total of 672 (339-333) and Gustavus scored 678 (335-343). The Cobbers avenged two earlier second-place finishes to St. Benedict in head-to-head competition in the fall half of the college golf season.
Concordia is currently rated third in the most recent Mastercard/Collegiate Golf Foundation NCAA Division III national rankings, while Gustavus is rated fifth and St. Benedict is rated ninth.
Both Concordia and St. Benedict had three golfers earn All-MIAC honors by finishing in the top 10 in the competition, while Gustavus had two All-MIAC golfers. All-MIAC golfers were: Kovash; Schmitt; Christie Strecker (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) of Concordia; Kari Weidner (Jr., Fargo, N.D./South HS) of Concordia; Alicia Golembeski (Fr., Waconia, Minn.) of Gustavus; Reiman (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) of Gustavus; Becky Cole (Fr., Andover, Minn.) of St. Benedict; Sarah Hagemann (Jr., Worthington, Minn.) of St. Benedict; Andrea Sievert (Sr., Lakefield, Minn./HL-O-L HS) of Augsburg; and Abby Owen (Fr., Little Falls, Minn.) of Gustavus.
Sievert's ninth-place finish is the highest ever by an Augsburg women's golfer, and marks the first-ever All-MIAC women's golf honoree for the Auggies. Weidner finished fifth in last year's MIAC competition, while Strecker placed sixth and Schmitt placed ninth.

Tournament Preview
by Tim Kennedy,
Gustavus SID
The first MIAC Championship event of the fall season will be contested this weekend as the women's golf teams play for their title at the Oakdale Country Club near Hutchinson. It appears that three teams are the frontrunners for the title and they are Concordia, St. Ben's and Gustavus.
Concordia has to be the favorite since they are the defending champions and have beaten both Gustavus and St. Ben's in head-to-head competition this fall. Since the MIAC began sponsoring a championship for women's golf in 1991, the Cobbers have won the title six times (1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997). St. Thomas won the title in 1994.
St. Ben's has bested Concordia twice in head-to-head competition this fall. They finished ahead of the Cobbers at the Concordia Invitational. The Blazers also finished ahead of Gustavus at the Concordia Invitational.
Gustavus and Concordia have only faced-off once this fall with Concordia finishing six strokes better at the Concordia Invite.
Gustavus has split its two meetings with St. Ben's, with the Gusties 18 strokes better than the Blazers at the UW-Eau Claire Invite and St. Ben's finishing 14 strokes better than Gustavus at the Concordia Invite.
Any way you look at it, it appears to be a very interesting tournament.
In the most current Division III National Poll, Concordia is ranked third, Gustavus is ranked fifth and St. Ben's is ranked ninth. This past weekend, Concordia won the Southwest State Invitational and again finished ahead of St. Ben's, while Gustavus won the very competitive Buena Vista Invitational.
In winning the BV Invite, Gustavus finished ahead of Simpson College, ranked second in Division III, and Mankato State, ranked in the top five in Division II.
Macalester junior Jennie Whitehouse will attempt to defend the medalist
title she claimed last fall by eight strokes. Others expected to
contend for the individual title include Christie Strecker, Kristen Hanson,
Kari Weidner and Nicole Koskey of Concordia, Heather Schmitt and Sheless
Davis of St. Ben's and Tammy Williams and Alicia Golembeski of Gustavus.
All of the above except for Golembeski, who is a first year player, finished
in the top ten at last year's tournament and earned all-conference honors.
