Snowden, Cobbers battle MIAC

Senior guard Joe Snowden has a knack for scoring points. He also has
a knack for scoring them when his team needs them most, getting six of
Concordia’s nine points in the overtime session to propel the Cobbers past
Macalaster, on Saturday, 68-61.
“His shots were all tough ones going to the basket, and [he also made
7 of 8] free throws,” said head coach Duane Siverson of Snowden’s overtime
heroics.
Snowden led the Cobbers in scoring with his 21 points. He also played
solid defense and came up with 5 steals against the Scots. “Our defense
was awesome in overtime,” said Siverson. “They didn’t get a good shot.”
Jeff Ubben also chipped in 10 points and was the only other Cobber
to put up double-digit numbers.
The Cobbers also held a 40-29 rebounding edge in the game.
Rebounds didn’t come as easily for the Cobbers on Wednesday, Jan. 10
when ex-Cobber Mike Wrobel and his St. Thomas teammates returned to Concordia.
The Cobbers, playing their third game in five days, got off to a slow start
and St. Thomas took an early 17-5 lead. Wrobel owned the boards in the
first half, hauling down 10 rebounds before twenty minutes had elapsed.
By halftime, the Cobbers had closed the gap to 35-29 in favor of St. Thomas,
even though Snowden, their leading scorer for the season, was 0-6 from
the field. The Cobbers pulled to 63-60 with 2:18 remaining in the game
when Snowden nailed a three. St. Thomas responded with a basket of the
two-point
variety. A half-minute later, with the Tommies up 65-60, Snowden again
hit a trey and brought the Cobbers within two. The Cobbers had chances
to score in the final 90 seconds, but never put
the ball in the basket. Snowden’s desperation shot at the end of regulation
never made it to the rim and the Cobbers lost their second straight game,
65-63. The Cobbers shot under 50 percent from the line, a statistic that
wasn’t overlooked by Siverson. “You can’t shoot free throws so poorly and
not execute a last second play and win,” he said. “We didn’t take care
of our own business.”
Snowden overcame his poor first half shooting and finished the game with
14 points. Kevin Gilchrest led the Cobbers with 15 points. A 69-68 win
over St. Mary’s on Monday, and a 67-52 loss to St. John’s on Wednesday
moved Concordia’s record to 5-4 in the MIAC, and 8-5 overall.

Female cagers capture three three more wins

The Concordia women’s basketball team revived its winning streak, Saturday,
topping Macalester 70-58. And on Monday they made it two in a row, with
an 82-62 victory over St. Mary’s.
“Our conference is so even at this point that it comes down to
whoever wants it more, “ said senior Brandi Myers.
Against Macalester, the Cobbers took a 37-28 lead into the locker room
at halftime, shooting an impressive 16 out of 32. Macalester remained within
10 points of the Cobbers for most of the
second half, pulling down 43 rebounds to Concordia’s 31. But Concordia
held the lead at the final buzzer, ending the game ahead 70-58.
“We have been focusing on our game, “ Myers said. “We want our offense
to be in sync and [we also want to keep] our defensive aggressiveness.
“
A strong inside game and unstoppable defense gave Concordia the Monday
win over St. Mary’s. The Cobbers controlled from the beginning, winning
the tip and establishing an early eight-point lead. After a series of turnovers
for both teams, the Cobbers pulled away from the Cardinals to a 38-23 halftime
lead. The second half saw an even stronger Concordia team build a 26-point
lead over the Cardinals. Concordia ended with an 82-62, 20 point win. “We
were very fired up for the game against St. Mary’s, “ Myers said. “We wanted
it more[than they did. “Myers credits new coach, Sara Cepek, as the reason
for the Cobbers success this season. “She has kept us going through a tough
season, “ Myers said. “She always prepares us well for each team.
"
On Wednesday the Cobbers grabbed another win, defeating previously unbeaten
and nationally ranked St. Bens, 71-55. The Cobbers boast an 8-2 record
in the MIAC, and are 10-3 overall.

Wrestlers preparing for conference challenges

Only two Cobber meets have bothered to keep scores. Eight meets in all,
though, have prepared Concordia’s wrestlers for their upcoming tests at
the end of the season. Head coach Doug Perry says that the his team is
still learning but looks to succeed, and end at least third at Conferences
in February. “It’s a young team that’s still adjusting to college,” said
Perry. “But they’re all scrappers, and their sights are set high.”
Perry sights several who’ve enjoyed success, including freshmen Jesse
Barnacle and Cory Winter, and juniors Zach Schroeder and Rory Olson. Barnacle
in particular has been a solid player, notching 10 wins so far for the
season. It’s the team’s performance, though, that for Perry is paramount.
And
its health and mind-set are keys to his approach. “We’d like to do
well at the end of the season, when the meets we compete in are most important,”
said Perry. “To do so we need to heal our injuries, and work on and maintain
good mental attitudes.”
Next for the Cobbers is a meet at the University of Mary, tomorrow
morning at 9. MIAC Duals follow Friday and Saturday, at Augsburg, and Conferences
are at St. Johns, on February 24.
