Teamwork keys tourney bound ballers...

The Concordia women’s basketball team has relied on teamwork to win its games. And following its tough loss to Carleton last weekend, the Cobbers regained this form, Monday, in defeating Gustavus. 
“Working as a team and being all on the same page can take you to the top,” said senior forward Sara Spears.


But first things first, and that was their loss on Saturday, 79-70 to Carleton. The game was marked early by run after run, the evenly matched teams taking turns at the lead. But Carleton went ahead for good late in the game’s first half. Spears was the high scorer with for the game with 22 points. And senior guards Sarah Jacobson and Steph Losch each boarded eight rebounds for Concordia. 
“In Carleton we were not ready,” said Spears. “We didn’t show up to play.”


Teamwork, though, and physical play spurred Concordia back to victory on Monday, 76-58 over Gustavus. Four minutes into the game the Cobbers went on a 10 minute, 24-8 run. Overall, they dominated the the first half, outscoring the Gusties 40-22. 
Gustavus came out fighting in the second half and made a run for the lead. They came as close as six points, but the Cobs staved them off to maintain their lead. Spears, Jacobson, sophomore forwards Katrina Wilberts and Kasey Bostow, and senior guard Brandi Myers all scored in double digits for Concordia. “We came out as a team,” Spears said. “Everyone contributed and played hard.”

With the victory, the Cobbers have now clinched a berth in the first-ever MIAC women’s playoff tournament. They are striving to win their remaining games, in hopes of acquiring a high seed for the
tourney. “We have a good chance in the tournament,” Spears said. “We are capable of beating any team in the conference, but it will depend on who comes ready to play.”

Two Concordia women’s basketball players have made history this season. Brandi Myers became the 16th Concordia player ever to score 1000 career points. She scored her 1000th point in the first game this season against St. Kate’s. It took a little longer, but Sara Spears also scored her 1000th career point against St. Kate’s, in a 96-56 Jan. 31 trouncing. A free throw with 11 minutes left in the game made her the 17th player to reach the mark in the school’s history. Spears is currently the second leading scorer for the Cobbers, and the team’s leading rebounder.
“Sara Spears brings leadership, experience [4 year starter], and a commitment to giving it her all and being the best in anything she puts her time and energy into,” said women’s head coach Sara Cepek.

Spears finished that game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Myers added 17.


On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Cobbers were in the hole before they knew it. St. Olaf hit 5 three-point baskets in the opening six minutes, and led by 10 at the half. The Cobbers trailed until midway through the second half, when a free throw by Spears gave them the lead at 55-54. But the Cobbers never relented, and won their eighth straight game, by a final margin of 76-68. Spears had her second double-double in a row, with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Myers also scored 16. Last Saturday, the Cobbers hosted the Carleton Knights, looking for their ninth straight win. With the Cobbers up by three midway through the first half, Carleton went on an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead. The Cobbers would trim the lead to seven, and went into the half trailing 36-29. The Cobbers cut the halftime deficit to one in the second half, but “ran out of legs a little bit,” according to Cepek.
With the Cobbers down one, Carleton went on a 6-0 run that all but ended the game for the Cobbers.
“I think Carleton had more urgency to win the game than we did,” said Cepek.

Concordia wound up losing the game by a final count of 79-70, dropping at that point to 13-3 in MIAC play. Spears finished with a game high 22 points, while Myers tallied 15. “This team, especially the seniors, want to go out with a conference title and a trip to the regional [tournament],” said Cepek. “That is possible if we continue to play hard, play together, and play to win.”

Concordia followed its Carleton loss with a convincing 76-58 win over Gustavus. Late on Wednesday, however, the Cobbers had another setback, losing to St. Thomas 84-72. Concordia is now fourth in the MIAC, with a record of 14-4. They are 16-5 overall.

Letnes and swimmers prepare for MIAC

On February 3rd, senior Shana Letnes of the Concordia swim team was a bit surprised when she won the 200 yard Breaststroke at the Minnesota Challenge, held at the University of Minnesota.  Her personal best time of 2:26.81 not only qualified her for the NCAA National Meet, but also helped her prepare for the upcoming MIAC Championship Meet.
“I went to this meet because I felt like I needed another meet before the conference meet.  I was surprised to swim that well, but now I have more confidence coming out of that meet and going into the MIAC Championships,” said Letnes.
Letnes isn’t the only swimmer preparing for the MIAC Championship.  The team as a whole has been tapering for the past couple weeks, which means, workout wise, they are sprinting more and fine tuning their starts and turns.
With their hard work, the women look to finish strong. The MIAC Championship is set for Feb. 15-17 at the University of Minnesota’s University Aquatic Center.
