9/23 Concordia Defeats #14 Nationally Ranked Gustavus.
Concordia survived an intense Gustavus atack, and first year
student Jerry Nathan (Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.) finished off a counter
attack at 78:49 to give the Cobbers a 1-0 victory. Gustavus undefeated
and ranked 14th in the latest NSCAA National Poll held the statistical
advantage in every category but the Cobber defense refused to break. Goalie
Kris Overby (Fr., Fargo ND, Fargo South H.S.) stopped all 7 shots he faced.
The win pushes Concordia's overall record to 4-2-1 and 1-0 in the MIAC.
Gustavus falls to 6-1 and 1-1 in the MIAC. Concordia plays host to St.
Thomas on Tuesday at 4:00.

The Teams :
Concordia (3-2-1)
The Cobbers are coming off of a weekend split at the third annual Cobber
Classic. They lost to Nebraska Wesleyan who is ranked fifth in the West
Region and is undefeated at 5-0-1. Concordia beat St. Scholastica in an
overtime thriller when first year student Jason VanValkenberg
(Fargo, ND) scored his first collegiate goal a minute into the second overtime
period. Concordia has played 3 overtime games out of their 6 contests,
they are 1-1-1. The Cobbers had only allowed 3 goals in their first
4 games until last weekend when they got beat for 5 in 2 games. The offense
has put 9 on the board in the teams 6 games.
Gustavus (6-0-0)
The Gusties are undefeated and ranked 14th in the nation. Gustavus
opened up the MIAC on Wednesday by beating St. Olaf 1-0. Senior Scott
Crowell (Burnsville) scored the game winner in the 77th minute when
he hammered a long range rocket that beat the Olaf keeper. Gustavus's high-powered
offense is on a tear scoring 14 goals in 6 games while the stingy defense
has only allowed 3 goals in 6 games.
The History:
Concordia and Gustavus have played four consecutive one-goal games
with the Gusties winning three of the four. In all three of those Gustavus
wins Greg Holker (Burnsville) scored the game winner. Holker, nicknamed
the "Cobber Killer", graduated in the spring and now works at Gustavus.
5 Years Ago: Concordia 4 Gustavus 2 OT
Concordia's Todd Hashbarger (Fargo) scores one of the greatest goals
in Cobber history, as he dribbles diagonally from the midline and finally
slots the ball through the Gustie goalie's legs to put the Cobbers up 3-2
in the first overtime. Peter Benson (Moorhead) adds a 4th in the 2nd overtime
to help Concordia win 4-2. Concordia would go on to win their first
MIAC titlein 1995.
